His ears twitched violently as his eyes widened. He ran out the door grabbing the closest thing to a weapon as he could find in his haste. A feeble weapon at best the only thing he could grab was the poker that sat resting up against the fire place in the main room of his house. His blue hair falling over his eyes as he ran for the direction of the scream was an annoyance he would have to ignore.
It had come from the main square, where the river ran through the town and most merchants who lazed about everyday dwelled. Crowds of people, Human, Elven and of course Half Breed. There weren’t many humans anymore though, more Half-Elven then anything else. There were still Elves though many were widowed because they outlived anyone who dwelled in the town. This proved to be an obstacle he couldn’t afford to leave him out. Trying to be polite by nudging everyone out of the way it became a nuisance and he began to helplessly shove the crowds out of the way until he reached the opening in the center, almost losing his balance in his last shove he was pulled into the center of the opening. Before he could realize what he was doing he was suspending in the air swinging around violently.
“Ah… What are you trying to do, sticking your nose in something that’s not your business hevanarchon?” The monster stuck its face uncomfortably close to Destyn’s as it said that finishing with a snort. Destyn grimaced from the creature’s breath as he grasped what was going on finally. It was his mom that had screamed. She was being held by a second one of these disgusting slithering creatures. Destyn grumbled as he felt his right hand being crushed under the monsters grip.
There was four in total, much taller and seemingly stronger then anyone around, even the knights would have a time taking one of these out, let alone four. His mom’s Blue eyes glinted in the night as she was arguing with the thing that was holder her, she seemed quite angry, but not scared. Destyn on the other hand was quite frightened. The monster turned his attention from Destyn as his mom raised her voice. Deciding quickly to conceal the weapon he held as well as he could and find out what had happened was the better decision he cloaked the poker with his vest. The monster held Destyn up by his right arm, and it began to pull and stretch in uncomfortable ways. He was lucky though the things seemed more interested in his mom then him.
“Look,” Destyn’s mother interjected “I have no clue what you’re talking about. My husband has been gone, yes, but he told me he was merely doing his duty and there wouldn’t be any fighting, he was only to interrogate some leaders in a town I’ve never heard of!” Grunting she gasped for air at the monster manhandled her so roughly.
Destyn really didn’t know about his father’s duties, only that he was rarely home, and it seemed as the days grew shorter as summer came to an end his father was gone for longer periods of time. Especially of late, he had sometimes wondered what it would be like to finally travel and go on adventures; just like the heroic tales his father had told him when he was little. Things didn’t seem so glamorous all of the sudden. Groaning with pain as his right arm felt it was about to fall off he decided it was time to find out what the was going on.
“Hey, mom, do you know these things?” sounding quite blunt, it was a stupid question but it was the only way to bring himself into this. His mom stopped arguing and she brushed her hair out of her face.
“Destyn, hunny. You don’t really know much about what your father does. But I’m sure this is something he’ll have to work out when he returns… if this nice man… err, thing, would just put us down I’m sure we could come up with something.” Of course mom had to say the sensible thing. Destyn’s eyes narrowed as he thought ‘oh yeah… that definitely their plan as well mom…’
Laughing hideously in an almost slither like tone the Creature that held his mom spoke again “So… you’re his son are you?” he said turning to Destyn.
“Unfortunately your husband won’t be returning,” The creature said looking down on Destyn’s mom once again. “The fleet that was sent out over to the Seplini encampment were slain and cooked for dinner!” he again began to laugh a malicious laugh. The red color in Destyn’s eyes seemed to drain into a pale brown.
“You’re lying!” Destyn screamed as he began to try and pull free from the Seplini’s grip.
“Am I?” The main Seplini slithered over still hold Destyn’s mom in his right hand bringing his face close to Destyn’s like the other had done. Destyn quickly looked away; just making eye contact with the thing was painful.
“You look tastier then your father” he smiled widely as his tongue slipped through his lips, it curled slightly through the air until it reached just under Destyn’s jaw. It moved up Destyn’s cheek until hitting his triangle framed glasses. Its tongue returning into its mouth just as a worm would dig through its hole, leaving a slime like substance on its lips. It began to slightly burn where the Seplini had licked. Quickly wiping it away with his free hand his mom could do nothing but helplessly watch, she seemed in shock, she was in a lifeless stare, not struggling as she once had. Destyn became angered, his eyes darkened as he looked into the Seplini’s face. The Seplini smirking a sly smile in return.
“How dare you. How dare you even say that!” Fog seemed to erupt from every which way, darker then ever. Pulling the poker from his vest in a blinding move he swiped the leader across the face making him cup his hands over his face. Dark green blood spurted all over the place. The cut was deep across the creatures left eye. This had caused him to drop Destyn’s mom. She came back to her senses long enough to scramble to the side lines where everyone else helplessly watched fearing death and trouble in the long quiet town.
Before letting the other Seplini figure out what happened he yanked himself into a slight flip when he had reached a horizontal position he slit the wrist of the monster that held him, releasing Destyn he finished a flip and landed. Not a smooth landing his legs buckled and he quickly got up and ran towards his mom.
“Mom! Are you ok!?” he asked quite urgently while massaging his shoulder which burned as if he had just been working out all day. Luckily he was left handed and could cast aside any worry that his swing would be any weaker. His mom looked horrible, she had looked like something had died within in her. Destyn had that feeling to, but not to such an extent there were too many other things clouding his mind at the moment to let it get to him.
“Destyn, you must go, quickly!” She said sobbing as tears began to stream down her unmarked face. It seemed that no one would stand up to fight these things, and it seemed he was the only one unaware of why they were even here. The two remaining uninjured Seplini’s approached him quickly, there would be no time to run, there was no where to run. The crowd held him in. and even if he left the town, where would he go? He knew nothing of the outside world, he would surely perish out there. His chances weren’t much better here though. Clutching the Poker in his hands tightly his knuckles turned white and sweat began to trickle down his face he stood in front of his mom. It was up to him to protect her now.
Blindly charging Destyn had made a stupid mistake and found out quickly that when they were ready that they were quite a bit faster then he had first thought they’d be. He was quickly cast aside bouncing across the slate ground. The crowd seemed highly concerned, but did nothing. They could only stare in disbelief as all of this was happening.
Coughing Destyn spurted blood out of his mouth. The Seplini had hit him straight in the jaw. Fumbling for his glasses he stood up even angrier then before. He adjusted his triangle frame glasses as they glinted in the moons light.
The sun was completely gone and torches were the best form of light. Destyn squinted as he got ready for the next strike. The Seplini that hadn’t harmed him yet pulled out a short blade from its scabbard. Glinting in the torch light Destyn’s madness consumed him again, darkness clouding out everything he had learned in the past years training. He charged again, this time fairing a bit better. Slicing and jabbing, dodging and parrying. It seemed the attack was relentless, there was no opening. That is no opening on the Seplini’s side, Destyn got caught off guard pulling away just in time receiving a tormenting gash across the left side of his chest, any further in and Destyn would have been toast. Craving air Destyn swallowed hard, blood and sweat falling towards the earth. The other two Seplini had now returned to the fight. It was hopeless, no way, four against one. Destyn fell to his knees limp. Where were the guards?... why was no one helping? Glancing over towards his mother he started to hear the soft melody of her prayers… his eyes began to droop again, the power of sleep overpowered him, he fell to the cold ground.
