What does R.E.A.C.H. stand for?
R.E.A.C.H. stands for "Racism Education Awareness and Communication at the High School."

Why does R.E.A.C.H. exist?
Several years ago, after a racial incident at Brookline High School, a group of students and teachers organised an entire school day called "Can We Talk?" for discussions and activities focused on race and racism at BHS. After that day, those students and teachers joined togeather to form R.E.A.C.H. We strive toward equity in achievement by all people in school and in life; we believe that everyone has the ability to achieve, and there are many factors than can affect one's achievement. We are dedicated to educating about, raising awareness of, and facilitaing communication around issues of race and racism at BHS.

What has R.E.A.C.H. done in the past?
> Facilitated classroom workshops/discussions on race and the achievement gap.
> Tutored minority students at Pierce elementary school.
> Participated in planning the school-wide day of assemblies and discussions in recognition      of the 50th anniversary of the  Brown v. Board of Education school desegregation                decision.
>Organised "VOICE IT!" an open-mike night in April 2004 for students and teachers to          share their stories of race and identity. The even included poetry and spoken work, song,      and dance.

What is R.E.A.C.H. planning to do this year?
SOME OF OUR IDEAS INCLUDE:

>Another "VOICE IT!" night
>Community art projects
>Training for and facilitating small-group "Courageous Conversations" about race and              acheivement, as a part of the new school districtwide initiative to eliminate the                      achievement gap.
>Start a speaker series
>Start a film series

Who can join R.E.A.C.H.?
R.E.A.C.H.'s actions are most effective when the group reflects the diversity of the student body at the high school. ALL STUDENTS ARE WELCOME TO JOIN!

When does R.E.A.C.H. meet?

R.E.A.C.H. meets Thursday X Blocks in room 247. Come with your friends and ideas!

You can still join R.E.A.C.H. even if you are in many other clubs. If you can't come during X-Blocks, we'll work something out! Come see Ms. Conner in Room 247 during first lunch or after school.
