Unit:  Abstract Art

 

Project/Theme: Picasso Portraits

 

Number of class sessions (30 minutes in length): 1

 

 

National Standard: Understanding the visual arts in relation to history and cultures.

 

Michigan Content Standards: Students will apply knowledge of materials, techniques, and processes to create artwork.

 

 

Objectives:

 

1.  Students will learn about Pablo Picasso and abstract art.

 

2.  Students will understand the differences between a normal portrait and an abstract portrait.

 

3.  Students will use markers to create an abstract self-portrait.

 

4.  Students will use materials in a safe and responsible manner.

 

5.  Students will use visual structures and functions of art to communicate ideas.

 

 

Materials (include type, size, and amount): for 16 students

            -20 pieces of 12”x18” white construction paper

            -20 pieces of 12”x18” assorted colored construction paper

            -Assorted markers

 

 

Visuals/Examples:

-         book

-         Pictures of abstract portraits and normal portraits

-         Finished example of an abstracted self portrait

 

 

 

Teacher Preparation (What will you do to get ready?):

            -Pre-cut white paper for mounting

            -Find and make visuals

           

Vocabulary:

            -Cubism

            -Abstract

            -Portrait

 

Motivation/Demonstration:

            -Read book to class

            -Step by step demonstration on board of how to abstract a face

 

Project/Classroom Procedure:

            -Students will draw their head on the paper and divide it in half vertically with a line.  Then, together we will draw normal eyes on one side and abstract eyes on the other side of the line, and so on for all facial features.

 

 

Assessment Process:

            -Students learned about Pablo Picasso and abstract art.

 

-Student understands the differences between a normal portrait and an abstract portrait.

 

-Students used markers to create an abstract self-portrait.

 

- Students used materials in a safe and responsible manner.

 

-Students used visual structures and functions of art to communicate ideas.
