Unit:  Collage

 

Project/Theme: Very Hungry Caterpillars

 

Art History/Multicultural Focus: Eric Carle (artist)

 

Number of class sessions (50 minutes in length): 1

 

Rationale:  Students will learn about tissue paper collage and create a classroom caterpillar.

 

National Standard: Understanding and applying media, techniques and processes.

 

Michigan Content Standards: Students will apply knowledge of materials, techniques, and processes to create artwork.

 

 

Objectives:

 

1.  Students will learn about and create collaged art.

 

2.  Students will understand the differences between materials, techniques and processes.

 

3.  Students will use different media, techniques and processes to communicate ideas, experiences and stories.

 

4.  Students will use materials in a safe and responsible manner.

 

5.  Students will use visual structures and functions of art to communicate ideas.

 

 

Materials (include type, size, and amount): for 16 students

            -20 pieces of wax paper approx. 8”x10"

            -10-20 large circle templates for tracing

            -20 Dixie cups filled with liquid starch

            -20 large paint brushes

            -Newspaper for tables

            -Large box of assorted tissue paper scraps

-         The Very Hungry Caterpillar book

-         Pictures of Caterpillars

-         Finished example of collaged circle

Teacher Preparation (What will you do to get ready?):

            -Cover tables in newspaper

            -Fill Dixie Cups with liquid starch

           

 

Motivation/Demonstration:

            -Read The Very Hungry Caterpillar to class

            -Demonstrate how to create collaged tissue paper circle

 

Project/Classroom Procedure:

            -Students will use templates to trace a circle onto wax paper.  Then they will paint liquid starch onto the circle and completely cover it with torn tissue paper so that there are no white spaces left.  Then they will paint liquid starch over top of it and wait to dry.  Once dry, the wax paper peels off and students are left with a stained glass type circle that will be added to all the students’ circles to create a stained glass classroom caterpillar in the window.

 

Safety Considerations:

            -Make sure students use scissors and liquid starch in a safe manner

 

Adaptations for Students with Special Needs:

            -Assign an art buddy to help with tasks

 

Assessment Process:

            -Students successfully created liquid starch collaged circle

            -Students effectively used liquid starch

            -Students gained knowledge of communication through their artwork

            -Students gained knowledge of color and or overlapping of tissue paper colors

            -Students put effort into making a collaged caterpillar circle
