Rationale: Students will learn about Egyptian Art and
create an Egyptian coffee collage.
National
Standard: Students apply media, techniques and processes with sufficient skill,
confidence, and sensitivity that their intentions are carried out in their
artworks.
Objectives:
1. Students will acquire knowledge of
monochromatic watercolors by using the Thai technique of coffee painting.
2. Students will acquire knowledge of Egyptian
Art.
3. Students will gain knowledge in collage
technique including composition and arrangement.
4. Students will learn the results of a limited
palette.
5. Students will learn how to effectively
combine different layers of media to create their artwork.
Materials: (for 25
students)
-25 sheets of 18x24 white tissue
paper
-25 sheets of 8 1/2x11 white poster board
-25 sheets of 11x14 black
construction paper
-25 sheets of 8 ˝ x 11 white drawing
paper
-25 bottles of Elmers White Glue
-25 small Dixie Cups filled with
cold coffee
-Photocopies of Egyptian Art
-25 black permanent markers
-25 drawing pencils
-25 erasers
-25 gold gel pens
-25 paintbrushes
-Coffee
Equipment: Copy machine, hair dryers optional for quick
drying

Preparation:
-Make a finished example of a coffee
collage
-Get books on Egyptian Art (make photocopies ahead
of time if students cannot access the copy machine)

Motivation/Demonstration:
Students will watch a teacher demonstration on how to create coffee collage and
look at books on Egyptian Art.

Procedure:
Procedure:
-Choose photocopies of Egyptian Art and draw some
personal hieroglyphics and tear the edges of the paper on them.
-Glue pieces onto posterboard in a visually
pleasing composition
-Once glue is dry, tear up tissue paper strips and dip
into a glue/water mixture and layer overtop of collage.
-Once tissue paper is dry, paint over collage
with coffee
-When coffee is dry, accent certain areas with permanent
marker and gold gel pens
-When finished, mount on black construction paper and make a border
with the gold gel pens
Day
1:
Students will watch the teacher
demonstration and choose Egyptian Art from books to be photocopied and will also
draw some of their own hieroglyphics.
Day
2:
Students will tear the edges of
their collage materials and glue them onto the poster board. Students will also tear up tissue paper and
layer it on top of the collage.
Day
3:
Students will paint their collage
with coffee. While waiting for things to dry, students can work on their border
for mounting or start one of the follow up projects.
Day
4:
Students will highlight certain areas of the collage
with the markers and gold gel pens. The
collages will be mounted on the black construction paper which should have a
gold gel pen border around it. The class
will then discuss and present the collages.
Safety
Considerations:
-Use cold coffee to prevent burns and be sure
students use materials in a safe and responsible manner.

for Students with Special Needs:
-Assign an art buddy to help with
difficult tasks.
