Unit:  Collage

 

Project/Theme: Rainbow Fish

 

Number of class sessions (50 minutes in length): 2

 

Rationale:  Students will learn about watercolor and tissue paper collages and create an underwater scene with a collaged rainbow fish.

 

National Standard: Understanding and applying media, techniques and processes.

 

Michigan Content Standards: Students will apply knowledge of materials, techniques, and processes to create artwork.

 

 

Objectives:

 

1.  Students will learn about watercolor and collage techniques.

 

2.  Students will understand the differences between materials, techniques and processes.

 

3.  Students will use different media, techniques and processes to communicate ideas, experiences and stories.

 

4.  Students will use materials in a safe and responsible manner.

 

5.  Students will use visual structures and functions of art to communicate ideas.

 

 

Materials (include type, size, and amount): for 16 students

            -20 pieces of 12”x18” white watercolor paper

            -Large box of assorted tissue paper scraps

            -20 watercolor sets with brushes

            -20 Dixie cups with water

            -Newspaper for tables

            -Assorted oil pastels

            -20 Dixie cups with diluted glue

 

 

 

Visuals/Examples:

-         The Rainbow Fish book

-         Pictures of fish and underwater scenes

-         Finished example

 

Teacher Preparation (What will you do to get ready?):

            -Cover tables in newspaper

            -Fill Dixie Cups with water

            -Fill Dixie Cups with diluted glue

           

 

Motivation/Demonstration:

            -Read The Rainbow Fish to class

-Demonstrate how to create underwater watercolor and oil pastel scene with tissue paper collaged fish.

 

 

Project/Classroom Procedure:

-After first drawing out with pencil, students will use watercolors and oil pastels to create an underwater scene, noting that watercolors do not react with oil pastels.  Once dry, students will use diluted glue and tissue paper scraps to create a collaged rainbow fish.

 

Safety Considerations: 

            -Make sure students use materials in a safe and responsible manner.

 

Adaptations for Students with Special Needs:

            -Assign an art buddy to help with difficult tasks.

 

Assessment Process:

            -Students gained knowledge of watercolors and oil pastels

            -Students effectively used materials

            -Students gained knowledge of communication through their artwork

            -Students gained knowledge of color and or overlapping of tissue paper colors

            -Students put effort into making their artwork
