Rationale: Students will learn about Vincent Van Gogh
and his sunflowers and they will create their own sunflowers.

Objectives:
1. Students will use different media,
techniques, and processes to communicate ideas, experiences, and stories.

3. Students will learn about and be able to
create a self-portrait.
4. Students will learn about Van Gogh and use
the collage technique.
5. Students will understand the differences
between materials, techniques, and processes.
Materials
(include type, size, and amount): for 16
students
-20 small paper plates
-30 sheets of 12”x18” yellow
construction paper
-20 sheets of 12”x18” green
construction paper
-20 pairs of scissors
-20 paper towel rolls
-10-20 bottles of Elmer’s Glue
-Approx. 10 staple guns
-20 crayons
-2 mason jars of sunflower seeds

-Pre-fold yellow paper
-Get supplies ready to pass out
Motivation/Demonstration:
-Read the class Camille and the Sunflowers
-Look at reproductions of Van Gogh’s
Sunflowers
Project/Classroom
Procedure:
-On pre-folded yellow paper (fold
one sheet in half and half again and then fold the other sheet in half
horizontally and cut in half. Each
student gets one full folded sheet and half of the other folded sheet to create
a total of six hands after traced and cut out) students will trace their hand.
-Cut out hands
-Glue green paper to paper towel
roll
-Glue hands around paper plate
-Add glue to center of paper plate
and collage sunflower seeds to it
-Staple stem to flower
Safety
Considerations:
-Make sure students use scissors and
staplers safely
-Make sure students don’t eat
sunflower seeds
Adaptations
for Students with Special Needs:
-Assign an art buddy to help with
difficult tasks

-Student created a sunflower
