Unit:  Collage

 

Project/Theme: Surrealism

 

Art History/Multicultural Focus: Salvador Dali, Romare Bearden, and Surrealism

 

Number of class sessions (60 minutes in length): 1-2

 

Rationale:  Students will learn about Surrealism and collage and create a surrealist, dreamlike artwork.

 

National Standard: Students apply media, techniques and processes with sufficient skill, confidence, and sensitivity that their intentions are carried out in their artworks.

 

Michigan Content Standards: Students will apply knowledge of materials, techniques and processes to create artwork.

 

Objectives:

 

1.  Students will acquire knowledge of the Surrealism movement.

 

2.  Students will acquire knowledge of Surrealism artists including Salvador Dali and Romare Bearden.

 

3.  Students will gain knowledge in collage technique including composition and arrangement.

 

4.  Students will create a dreamlike artwork.

 

5.  Students will learn how to effectively combine different layers of media to create their artwork.

 

 

Materials:  (for 25 students)

            -Assorted magazines to be cut out

-Mixed media: pencils, oil pastels, watercolors, markers, crayons, and colored pencils, paint.

-20 sheets of 12”x18” white construction paper

            -20 bottles of glue

            -20 pairs of scissors

 

 

 

Visuals/Examples:

            -Art prints of Surrealist work

            -Completed example of dreamlike artwork

            -Book on Romare Bearden

            -Make a finished example of a dreamlike collage

Project/Classroom Procedure:

-Students will use the mixed media available and the magazine cutouts to create a dream-like collaged artwork.

 

Safety Considerations:

            -Make sure students use materials in a safe and responsible manner.

 

Adaptations for Students with Special Needs:

            -Assign an art buddy to help with difficult tasks.

            -Composition/arrangement

            -2-3 personal drawings included
