Title:  Visual Puns

 

Grade Level: 6th grade

Unit Content: colored pencil drawing

 

Class time 50/90 minutes: ­­ 90      Number of class periods: ­­ 4

 

Michigan Content Standards:

            1.  Students will apply knowledge of colored pencil, drawing techniques,                           and processes to create Visual Pun artwork.

2.  Students will explore and use visual puns, symbols, and ideas to

     communicate meaning.                               

            3.  Students will use art materials safely and responsibly.

            4.  Students will use visual characteristics and organizational principles of                        art to communicate ideas.

Objectives/Outcomes:

            1.  Student created 3 idea sketches.

            2.  Student followed directions and created a successful Visual Pun.

            3.  Student included principles and elements of art and is able to discuss                           their artwork with correct art language during critique.

            4.  Student put effort into creating Visual Pun.

 

Prior skills and prior learning:

·        beginning drawing skills

·        knowledge of principles and elements of art

 

Materials needed:

·        drawing paper (9x12)

·        colored pencils

·        construction paper (for mounting)

·        glue

 

Teacher Preparation: 

·        create and find examples of visual puns

·        Salvador Dali print (fantasy)

Demonstration of techniques or processes:

·        show examples

·        discuss visual puns

·        make a list of visual pun examples:  spelling bee, tree surgeon, handyman, pickled herring, home run, internal revenue, funny bone, smoked salmon, hotdog, sandwich shop, boxing match, brainstorm, pen pal, Niagara Falls.

 

Instructions to students: 

·        make up a list of verbal puns (words with double meaning) to add to the list

·        create 3 idea sketches of visual puns

·        select 1 idea sketch and make a drawing or cartoon with colored pencil

·        mount drawing on construction paper

 

Time to work:

Day 1:  Introduce Visual Puns assignment.  Discuss “fantasy” in Salvador Dali’s

             art work.  Create list of visual puns.  Begin idea sketches.

 

Day 2:  Class time to work on sketches.  By the end of class, students should pick                   sketch for final drawing.

 

Day 3:  Class time to work on project. Mount on colored paper when finished.

 

Day 4:  Critique.
