Title:  Wacky Monument

 

Grade Level: 8th grade

Unit Content: found object sculpture

 

Class time 50/90 minutes: ­­ 90      Number of class periods: ­­ 5

 

Michigan Content Standards:

            1.  Students will apply knowledge of found object sculpture and mixed                              media to create a 3-D sculpture.

2.  Students will explore and use found objects, symbols, and ideas to

     communicate meaning.                               

            3.  Students will use art materials safely and responsibly.

            4.  Students will use a theme, visual characteristics and organizational                  principles of art to communicate ideas.

Objectives/Outcomes:

            1.  Student created 3 idea sketches.

            2.  Student followed directions and created a successful Wacky Monument                      sculpture.

            3.  Student included principles and elements of art and is able to discuss                           their artwork with correct art language during critique.

            4.  Student put effort into creating Wacky Monument.

 

Prior skills and prior learning:

·        beginning drawing and sculpture skills

·        knowledge of principles and elements of art

 

Materials needed:

·        variety of drawing and painting materials and sculptural materials

·        12” x 18” drawing paper (for sketches)

 

Teacher Preparation: 

·        create and find examples of Wacky Monuments

Demonstration of techniques or processes:

·        show examples

·        discuss found object sculpture

·        Make a list of possible Wacky Monument themes:  an ode to an extinct or endangered species, a mythological hero, a problem of modern living, a trophy to a bizarre event, etc.

Instructions to students: 

·        introduce examples of Wacky Monuments

·        Create a 3-D sculpture of a Wacky Monument that is at least 5 inches tall.

 

Time to work:

Day 1:  Introduce Wacky Monument assignment.  Discuss parody, eccentric, and bizarre monuments.  Create list of Wacky Monument themes and examples.  Begin idea sketches.

 

Day 2:  Class time to work on sketches.  By the end of class, students should pick                 sketch for final sculpture.

 

Day 3:  Class time to work on project.

 

Day 4:  Class time to work on project. Must stand on its own for critique.

 

Day 5:  Critique.
