  • January1933: Republican forces, under the orders of Captain Manuel Rojas Feigespán, put down a revolt of anarchist land labourers at Casas Viejas.

  • 30 January: Hitler is named Chancellor of Germany.

  • February: Oda al rey de Harlem published in Los cuatro vientos (Madrid).

  • 5 April: First performance of El amor de Don Perlimplín con Belisa en su jardín by Pura Ucelay’s Club Teatral Anfistora.

  • Spring: Meets the Galician writer Eduardo Blanco-Amor.

  • Holy Week: With La Barraca in Valladolid, Zamora, Salamanca.

  • 8 May: First performance of Bodas de Sangre in Madrid by Josefina Diaz’s theatre company.

  • May: Signs a petition condemning Hitler.
    Gets to know Rafael Rodríguez Rapún, who works as secretary for La Barraca.

  • 31 May: Bodas de sangre opens in Barcelona.
    La Barraca puts on Fuenteovejuna by Lope de Vega in Valencia. (Lorca’s version omits the final scene with the favourable arbitration of the Catholic Monarchs in favour of the villagers).

  • June: Fragments of El público appear in los cuatro vientos.

  • July: Bodas de sangre performed by Lola Membrives in Buenos Aires is tremendously successful.

  • 15 August: Oda a Walt Whitman published in Mexico.

  • 29 September: Embarks in Barcelona for Buenos Aires, Argentina.

  • 29 September-13 October: On his way to Argentina works on Yerma and a new talk called Juego y teoría del duende.

  • 13 October - April 1934: In Buenos Aires, Argentina.
    Performances of Bodas de Sangre, a new version of La Zapatera Prodigiosa, Mariana Pineda, and Lope De Vega’s La Dama Boba under Lorca’s direction, and the first performance of Retablillo de don Cristóbal y doña Rosita.

    Talks on Juego y teoría del duende, Cómo canta una ciudad de Noviembre a Noviembre, Poeta en Nueva York, and El canto jondo.

  • 29 October: The Spanish Falange is founded.

  • 19 November: Electoral victory of right-wing CEDA, which doesn’t participate in centre-right government.

  • 20 November: Gives his talk on Rubén Darío “al alimón” (in joint delivery) with Pablo Neruda.

  • 1 December: First performance of the new version for Lola Membrives of La Zapatera with popular music and dance, and sets by Manuel Fontanals.

  • 22 December: In Rosario with ex-fiancé of cousin Matilde Picossi.

  • 30 January 1934: To spend a few weeks in Montevideo, Uruguay, where he visits the grave of his friend, the painter Rafael Pérez Barradas.

  • 4 March: First performance of La dama boba.

  • 26 March: Retablillo de don Cristóbal y doña Rosita performed in the foyer of the Avenida theatre.

  • 27 March: Leaves Buenos Aires for Spain, arriving in Barcelona on 11 April.

  • Spring: Eduardo Blanco-Amor visits him at the Huerta de San Vicente.

  • July: In the Huerta de San Vicente, Granada, he finishes Yerma and El diván del Tamarit.

  • 13 August: Ignacio Sánchez Mejías dies in hospital after having been gored in the Manzanares bullring on 11th August.
    Lorca is at the International Summer University of Santander with La Barraca.

  • 1 October: Gil-Robles’ CEDA withdraws its support of right-wing government. Government cedes three key ministerial posts to CEDA.

  • 4 October: General strike. Insurrection of miners in Asturias, who take control of Oviedo.

  • 7 October: José Antonio Primo de Rivera (son of dictator) heads a demonstration in Madrid in favour of “the sacred unity of Spain”.

  • 15 October: Oviedo insurrection crushed. Proclamation of independent republic in Catalonia “within the Federal Republic of Spain”: quashed within ten hours.

  • November: First reading of Llanto por Ignacio Sánchez Mejías in Carlos Morla Lynch’s house in Madrid. Has also started to write Doña rosita la soltera.

  • 29 December 1934: Opening night of Yerma in Madrid.
