從1990至1992年間,新捷運總共引進了700輛德國平治O405型單層巴士,以取代年事日高的平治OF1417型以及富豪B57型巴士。跟同廠雙層巴士底盤O305型一樣,平治O405型是一款牙簽陣式的城市巴士底盤,採用原廠OM447h引擎,縱置在車尾地台以下的位置,配合原廠W3E 110/2.2R全自動波箱,能提供充沛動力,應付星洲種種路面環境。故此,在不同地區的新捷運巴士路線,都有平治O405巴士的出沒影子。

  在新捷運的700輛訂單中,其中500輛是附有空調設備的,而另外的200輛則不帶空調系統。在1999年,新捷運開始翻新旗下舊型單層巴士,而這700輛非空調及空調的平治O405巴士也成為翻新工作的對象。翻新工作包括替非空調舊車加裝空調系統及冷氣槽、更換車窗與座椅,以及替空調舊車更換冷氣槽及座椅等等。另一方面,部份被改裝為空調的平治O405,被歸入新巴消閒私人有限公司旗下,行走裕廊島路線711、712及713號。以下是一個關於平治O405巴士的簡單總結:

    From 1990 to 1992, a total of 700 Mercedes Benz O405s from Germany entered service with SBS Transit. They played an important role in replacing those aged MB OF1417 and Volvo B57. Similar to MB O305 chassis, MB O405 is a monocoque city-bus chassis. It is powered by the underfloor MB OM447h engine, mounted horizontally at the rear, via the MB W3E 110/2.2R fully-automatic gearbox. The strong power delivered makes MB O405 a suitable model for all the roads in Singapore. This is why MB O405s can be spotted everywhere in Singapore, especially in Jurong and Ang Mo Kio.

    Within the MB O405 fleet, 200 were non air-conditioned while the other 500 were air-conditioned when they were first built. In 1999, SBS Transit started refurbishing its single-deckers. Nowadays, all non air-con MB O405s have been converted to air-con. Windows and seats have been replaced and a/c vents have been added as well. The seats and a/c vents of air-con ones have also been refurbished. Besides, a number of converted MB O405s have been allocated to SBS Leisure Pte Ltd and are used on Jurong Island services.
