My name is Shari Puorto and I have built this site for my father, current & future Puortos. My father is the descendent of John William Puorto Sr. from New Haven, Connecticut. John Sr. is one of six siblings. His parents, Florinda Mormile/Puorto & Dominic Puorto are seen at the bottom of this page with their family. Before moving to Hamden, John Sr. and Malley (my grandparents) lived in New Haven; first on Munsen St. then on Butler St. (in approx.) 1948 with their three kids: John, Joan & Sandi. Shortly afterward, John Sr. acquired a few horses so the family moved to Mt. Carmel. They lived there for 5-6 years all three children attending Mt. Carmel St. Elementary. John Sr. was an upholsterer and Malley worked in a factory where they made machinery parts. She also helped the ol' man with sewing cushions and making the kids clothing and costumes! John Sr. mostly refurnished people's home furnishings, but at times you'd see him upholstering the booths at Pepe's or Phyllis's @ Savin Rock (next to Jimmies). In Approx. 1958, the family moved to New Hall St., Joan & Sandi started school at New Hall St School and John Jr at Hamden High (where he played various sports like Baseball and Basketball). Approximately 1 year later, John Sr. moved to Florida to obtain residency. Malley refusing to leave her son, waited to move until after graduation and after John and Joan got married (Joan married now x- husband, Ron Allton in 1962). Malley finally moved to Florida to join John Sr. and was later joined by Sandi and new husband Gene Garzzillo. John Jr. stayed in CT (with now x-wife, Carol Chirgwin/Puorto), enrolled at the Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point (graduated in 1961) and moved to West Haven. John Jr. eventually went off to college and received his masters at University of Connecticut.
In 1965 with first born son, Jeffrey William, my parents left CT. for sunny Canoga Park, California. Shortly after, Christopher John and me, Shari were added to the family tree. After 5 years we headed back to CT! Then once again on July 14, 1984 went back to California and lived in Agoura Hills. Here, Chris and I graduated from Oak Park High School. Where are we now? My mom lives in Port Hueneme with boyfriend Mark; Chris lives in Dallas and works at a restaurant; Jeff lives in Oxnard, I live in Hermosa Beach and work in the Broadband industry; and my dad......well, after 30 years in the Aerospace industry, he retired! He soon will be moving with wife Isabelle to Switzerland.
Where's the rest of the family? The Puortos can be found all over the U.S. & Italy. We live in Los Angeles, San Diego, Florida, Connecticut, Massachusetts & New York. To my knowledge, my immediate family is the only family in the U.S. carrying the Puorto name. We were recently reunited with the Puorto's in Italy! Click here to meet them: Stefano.
