The Fort Wayne Komets may have lost their chance at one top scorer but are closing in on another. Chris Grenville, the Komets' top pick in the recent United Hockey League dispersal draft, signed with Laredo of the Central Hockey League earlier this week. He'll quickly be forgotten if the Komets sign left wing Colin Chaulk.
Chaulk, 25, has bounced between the Class AA and Class AAA levels of minor-league hockey the last few seasons. Komets fans remember him best as the captain of the Missouri River Otters two years ago where he scored 53 points in 39 games. That same year he played 37 games in the International Hockey League with Kansas City, scoring 18 points.
Last year Chaulk scored 65 points in 55 games with Colorado of the West Coast Hockey League and also played 13 games in the American Hockey League with Grand Rapids. Besides giving the Komets a legitimate scorer, he would be a strong candidate to be their new captain.
"We have had discussions with him and they are proceeding in the right direction," Komets President Michael Franke said. "We're chasing him hard. He's going to make a decision in a couple of weeks."
