September 2000

Cheyenne is a natural, sweet soda springing from limestone aquifers a mile deep. It maintains a temperature of 55 F and is believed to be 20,000 years old.

In 1872 Mr William Bell and General William J. Palmer (the town of Palmer Lake is named after him) built a rustic stick pagoda to cover the spring. In 1890 the Manitou Mineral Water Company replaced the pagoda with this red sandstone house allowing the spring to bubble out into a baroque style basin.  In 1990-91 the spring and surrounding area were restored by the Mineral Springs Foundation.  It’s right on the main road through town so take care photographing!

Shoshone Spring is a medicinal spring and contains sulphur.  It was once highly recommended by doctors. The spring, in a circular red brick building, is due for renovation in 2000-2001.  It is one of the five natural springs.

Update January 2001

Shoshone appeared to be at the same stage of restoration as it was in September.  Cheyenne had been turned off for the icy weather as it spills on to the pavement and could be a safety hazard.
