The New Punks | ||||||

A little while ago at the Trash Film Orgy, the thing that seemed to be on everybody's mind was that there were tons of punks crammed in the Crest. Once you've been in Sacramento for a while, you start to recognize all the regular punk kids, so seeing all these kids with their colorful hair and mohawks was strange, because no one I knew had ever seen any of them. Now, people's automatic response to this was that they're new and that they're not real punks, etc, etc. Everyone in the scene looks down on this kids because their new and still learning. But why is that bad? We were all new to it at first. It's great that all of these kids are getting their start. For christs sake, their like a fucking new generation. In my opinion, when kids in middle school or high school start getting into punk rock, I think that they have the most common sense then all of their peers. To get involved in a scene who laughs at money, see's the problems in the world and acts on it, and rebels against stereotypical culture takes a lot of courage and a lot of brains. Instead of making them feel like shit, we should be cherishing them and nuturing them to see what awesome people they will become. The punk scene in Sacramento has gone to shit. Another way of looking at it is that these kids coming from high schools and middle schools may bring the unity back into the scene. Maybe they will be in awesome bands. Maybe they will start an awesome zine or venue. These kids might make a new punk scene, a great punk scene. They might be the kids who can honestly use the word unity again. I guess what i have to say is, when you see some new punks around town, instead of automatically mentally critizing them, just look at the potential they have, and remember that we all had to get our start somewhere. - Heather |
