My Stupid Mouth

Joel uncomfortably fidgeted in his seat, and then drank from his cup of water. The awkward silence kept dragging out. He had agreed to take one of Paul's friends out for a night in town, but he didn't expect for Paul's friend to be a female, a woman who made him tongue-tied then blab his whole life story to her. Usually the shy, quiet, reserved one was gone and instead was a man who did not know when to shut up.

My stupid mouth
Has got me in trouble
I said too much again
To a date over dinner yesterday
And I could see she was offended
She said "well anyways. . ."
Just dying for a subject change

Ridley sighed and gave a fake chuckle as Joel finished another of one of his many stories he was telling. She glanced at her watch and played with her napkin. She was getting tried and bored and just wanted to crawl back to her hotel bed.

Oh, another social casualty
Score one more for me
How could I forget?
Mama said "think before speaking"
No filter in my head
Oh, what's a boy to do?
I guess he better find one soon

Joel bit his bottom lip as Ridley looked out the window. He could see her playing with her napkin, ripping and rolling them into tiny balls. He shook his head and toyed with the shakers. He knew that this 'date' was becoming disastrous because all he was doing was talking. He was trying really hard to impress her because a cat got his tongue.

We bit our lips. She looked out the window
Rolling tiny balls of napkin paper
I played a quick game of chess with the
Salt and pepper shaker
And I could see clearly
An indelible line was drawn
Between what was good, what just
Slipped out and what went wrong

Ridley quickly stole a glance at Joel. His lips were pouted and his eyebrows were furrowed together in frustration.

Oh, the way she feels about me has changed
Thanks for playing, try again.

Joel sighed as his chances were slipping away. His first impression was not a great impression.

How could I forget?

He had tripped over an unbalanced sidewalk and cursed like a sailor, loudly, so loud that he was sure the aliens in mars heard him. He had seen her face turn bright red in embarrassment as the onlookers watched, waiting what would happen next. He didn't even think before he yelled out, "What the fuck are you people looking at?"

Mama said "think before speaking"
No filter in my head
Oh, what's a boy to do?
I guess he better find one

He couldn't stop himself and he knew that Ridley would have wanted to die anywhere but there, next to him.

I'm never speaking up again. It only hurts me
I'd rather be a mystery than she desert me

Joel knew that he was never opening his mouth again.

Oh, I'm never speaking up again
Starting now

But that didn't last long, until they finally got to the restaurant and he opened his mouth. Words were flowing out before his brain could process.

One more thing.
Why is it my fault?
So maybe I try too hard
But it's all because of this desire
I just wanna be liked, I just wanna be funny
Looks like the jokes on me
So call me captain backfire

Joel was so afraid to do anything. He was trying to get Ridley to understand him, but the more he tried, the more he screwed up. Ridley stood from her seat and sat next to Joel. His eyes burned with questions and confusion. Joel opened his mouth, but Ridley placed her finger over, "Shut up." She whispered, quieting him.

I'm never speaking up again. It only hurts me
I'd rather be a mystery than she desert me

She leaned in closer to him and pressed her lips against his. Their minds and hearts exploding. Yeah, he was never opening his mouth again.

Oh, I'm never speaking up again
Starting now

.end.
