SAGINAW DOWNTOWN LIONS CLUB “MICHIGAN’S BEST” June 11, 2002 Sault Ste. Marie, Mich -- The Saginaw Downtown Lions Club was awarded Best Lions Club in Michigan from the Michigan Association of Lions Clubs at the recent state convention in Sault Ste. Marie, Mich. The statewide public relations contest measured the overall effectiveness of the over 300 Lions Clubs in Michigan. The title of Michigan’s Best was handily won by the Saginaw Downtown Lions Club by garnering 679 points, more than doubling the score of the nearest competitor. The club’s qualified scores came from impressively strong, balanced scoring from a variety of categories, including: · Increased membership by over 33% · Over 72 visits to other clubs · Over 150 points for community service projects · Maintains a year-round club website · Year-round used eyeglass / hearing aid collection · Distribute a weekly newsletter year-round · Over 51 points for youth programs · Club president Bob Heft attended two International Leadership Institutes and a State Leadership Institute · Strong attendance in club, district and state meetings · Hosted a Zone Meeting and a Regional Conference · 100 percent new member orientation and involvement · Maintains Lions Park in Downtown Saginaw · Hosted Children’s Christmas Party for 24 elementary school children in Saginaw · Sponsored a band student for International Convention in Osaka, Japan. The Saginaw Downtown Lions Club is one of the oldest clubs in Michigan, founded in 1920. The club meets the first Wednesday of the month at 6:00 p.m. at the Texan Restaurant, 5656 State St. in Saginaw Township, and all other Wednesdays at 12:15 p.m. at the Saginaw Club, 219 N. Washington Ave., Downtown Saginaw. |
