SAI, an International Music Fraternity, was founded on June 12, 1903 at the University School of Music in Ann Arbor, Michigan.  It was organized "to form chapters of music students and musicians who shall by their influence and their musical interest uphold the highest levels of a music education; to raise the standard of productive musical work among the women students of colleges, conservatories, and universities."  As of September 2006 there were 105,376 initiated members worldwide.

The Cleveland Alumnae Chapter of SAI was installed February 24, 1946.  National President, Annelle Chandler; National Secretary, Mildred Odeli Sale officiated.  There were thirty-one Charter Members.  Ruth Pollock Hamm is still associated with the Cleveland Alumnae Chapter.  The chapter has been in existence for 58 years.  It is in Sigma B Province, covers a large geographical area, and has a diverse program of monthly meetings.  Once a year the chapter also sponsors a performance to senior citizens.  There are currently 21 active members.

The Cleveland Alumnae Chapter has sponsored a scholarship for string students for the last 29 years.  This competition is open to all string students between the ages of 8 and 12.  Students are accepted into the competition upon recommendation of their teacher.  The judges for the competition are Cleveland Orchestra members.  The prize money is sustained by an endowment fund from the chapter members.  The Chapter received a National Service Project Award from SAI for their work in this area.
