| Up From The Gutter Is there a worse place than the Gutter? It is a place of broken dreams; hard realities that dash our high hopes of a Strike against the hard surface of the Lane's backboard. It is a place we may find ourselves in over and over again, making the same mistakes despite our best efforts. But it is also a place of renewal and a second chance, if we consider it properly. After all, we have nothing left to lose and nowhere to go but the Ball Return. It is at this moment, however, that we need guidance and a clear assessment of why our path down the Lane brought us here. In quiet reflection, we can turn our thoughts to the Master Bowler. With the benefit of a much greater perspective, the Master can offer council to the Bowler who openly seeks to improve. Although we all have spent some time there, none of us were meant to remain in the Gutter. Here are some common reasons why we fall off the Lane. 1. Overconfidence- We simply forget that with each roll of the Ball, we have a chance to fail as well as succeed. Anything can happen at any moment. 2. Inattention - Distracted by thoughts which come between us and the clarity of vision required to properly roll the Ball, we lose focus and drift off the Lane. 3. Anger - This occurs when we apply too much force to the Ball, believing that "might makes right." If you have ever seen a child roll a Strike, then you know that it is not the power behind the Ball which matters, but the power within the Bowler. 4. Fear - That which causes the rigidity that interferes with a proper Approach and Release. Our experience in the Gutter can quickly send us into a spiral of failure and recrimination, unless we learn to Bowl in the moment and let go of past mistakes. Do not be governed by the Frames behind you, but rather take each Frame as an opportunity to improve. |
