Center for
Ethnomusicology
Objective
The main objective of the Center is to promote
the study of Ethnomusicology in India.
Activities
To achieve this objective, the center is
engaged in the following activities:-
- Seminars, Workshops, Conferences and
Lectures on Music, Dance, and Drama with
ethnomusicological perspective are arranged.
- Appreciation Courses on the Musics of
other Cultures are conducted to train Indian Music
listeners to appreciate and understand other Musics
- An Information Services Department is
being built to provide help to the research scholars in
India and from abroad about Research Institutions,
Musicologists, Musicians, Libraries and Archives.
- An archive and library on
ethnomusicological material will be built up to help
research fellows.
- A Research Journal carrying articles on
Indian Music amd other musical systems with a perspective
of Anthropology, Sociology, and Culture will be brought
out on a semi-annual basis.
- Events which will develop international
understanding thru Music such as music performances of
other cultures amd experimental concerts with
cross-cultural orientation will be promoted.
- Short term training courses on Indian
Music theory and practice to foreign research scholars
are conducted.
Background
The Center was set up in Chennai, India in July
1986 by Dr. S.A.K.Durga who is also the founder- Director of the
Center. Dr.Durga holds a Ph.D in Ethnomusicology fromWesleyan University
USA and did her post-graduate research in Ethnomusicology at the
