Page Two (return to Page One ? ) |

Step Nine: Remember that you are now working from the inside of the hat out. Lay down a layer just as you did before we put the resist layer on. Beware of cats trying to be helpful! (Thats Hagl by the way) |
Step Ten: Add the next layer, Its important to try and make this side the same as the first, so try to remember how much fibre you used at each stage. |
Step Eleven: We're onto the colours used for the outside of the hat now. Remember to keep it even and thin |
Step Twelve: Next layer, as always at right angles to the one before |
Step Thirteen: Last layer, this is the outside of the hat so take extra care to make it smooth and even. Check that no white fibres from the inside are showing at the seams and do a bit or rearranging if they do. Check for thin spots. |
Step Fourteen: Press down the fibres with your hands then sprinkle the hat with very hot soapy water. |
Step Fifteen: Place a layer of bubblewrap on top, bubble side down and press all over to compact the fibres and get the hot soapy water into every part of the hat.. Add a little soap suds to the wrap if your hands arent sliding freely, and keep rubbing and sliding your hands around to start the felting process. |
Step Sixteen: Lift off the bubblewrap and your hat should look like this. Notice that the brim edge of the hat has been left ragged, we'll be trimming it later so there is no need to worry about it at this stage. |
Step Seventeen: You should be able to work on the felt without the bubblewrap layer now. Rub the whole surface using circular motions, then back-and-forth motions, and keep going! This is good excercise! |
