SRR UNIFORM GUIDELINES
FEDERAL UNIFORM GUIDELINES FOR A BASIC WESTERN FEDERAL IMPRESSION
Uniform guidelines will vary from event to event.  We will meet all published event guidelines.  However, in building a quality impression, use this guideline to build a basic western, federal impression that will cover you for many events over many campaigns.  It will serve you as a foundation to meet other event guidelines.  Please use our Suggested Vendors page to buy wisely.

                                                    
BASIC WESTERN FEDERAL UNIFORM
Headgear:
*  Civilian slouch hat. Black or grey preferred. Brim to be stitched and include a sweatband.  No floppy hats.
* Hardee Hat. Black wool felt,  sweatband, stitched on brim.
* Forage cap. Federal or indigo blue wool, correct leather bill and not shaped like a baseball cap. Forage caps are the   least preferred of the three options.

Shirt:
* U. S. Regulation Issue. Donet flannel. To be all hand-stitched and flat-felled seams. Natural off-white.
* Contract shirt. Blue, grey or tan cotton. Machine stitched with hand-sewn button holes.
* Civilian shirt. Hand-sewn 100% wool or 100% cotton-woven checks, or muslin with hand-sewn button holes.

Sack Coats/Frock Coats:
* Fatigue blouse. Lined or unlined. Wool, 4 button front. Hand sewn button holes. Schuylkill or Cincinnati arsenal  recommended.
* Commercial blouse. Civilian manufactured. Lined, 4, 5, or 6 button blouse, hand-sewn button holes.
* Frock coat. Lined and padded in the chest, lined in the sleeves. 9 button front with pockets in the tails. Hand-sewn  button holes. Options 1 or 2 is preferred.

Trousers:
* All trousers to be sky blue, wool kersey with stamped-tin paper back buttons.

Suspenders:
* Any type of period civilian model with tin or brass buckles.

Drawers:
* Civilian pattern. Hand-sewn button holes.
* Military issue. Hand-sewn button holes.

Socks:
* Civilian socks. Particularly hand-knitted cotton or wool.

Shoes:
* Jefferson booties/brogans. Black with pegged, stitched or pegged and stitched soles.
* Identified civilian boots. (Option 1 is preferred).

BLANKETS, TENTAGE, ETC.

Blankets:
* Brown or grey U.S. issue blankets with brown preferred.
* Civilian blankets of 100% wool, should be muted earth tones.
* No Quilts.
Tentage/Gum Blankets-Ground Cloth:
* Shelter half. Canvas twill with NO brass grommets. Rope and hand-sewn button holes.
* U.S. issue gum blanket or poncho. Small grommets.

ACCOUTREMENTS

Haversacks:
* U.S. issue tarred type.
Canteens:
* U.S. issue smoothside with or without jean or wool cover.
Knapsacks (Optional):
* U.S. issue double bag.
* Blanket Rolls are also encouraged.
Cartridge Boxes:
* .58 caliber issue boxes. Box may be carried on belt.
* Proper tins must be included.
Cap Boxes:
* U.S. M 1850.
* U.S. Shield front.
Bayonet Scabbard:
* U.S. two, seven or eight rivet.
* Must have an attached tip.
Waistbelt:
* U.S. issue plate with appropriate belt.

WEAPONS

M 1861 Springfield: We strongly encourage repros with proper modifications.
M 1863 Springfield: We strongly encourage repros with proper modifications.
M 1855 Springfield: We strongly encourage repros with proper modifications.
M 1853 Enfield: We strongly encourage repros with proper modifications.
Appropriate rifle sling (optional)

PROHIBITED

No hat brass. 
No modern glasses or sunglasses.
No cigarettes. Cigars are strongly discouragedNo A-frames tents.
No modern anachronisms.
Pistols are limited to officers. (and even these are to be unloaded at ALL times).
No 2 band or smoothbore muskets allowed.
CONFEDERATE UNIFORM GUIDELINES FOR A BASIC ARMY OF TN IMPRESSION
BASIC AOT CONFEDERATE UNIFORM
A.  Coat or Jacket - All button holes will be hand sewn.  Buttons will consist of  bone,  wood, coin or penny, and thermo-plastic.  Materials will be consistent with the type of garment; for instance a "Columbus Depot" jacket should be constructed of woolen jeans.
1.  Military jacket of deep south pattern such as the Columbus Depot ;Alabama Mystery ;Atlanta Depot,, etc.
2.  Military frock coat with little trim.
3.  Civilian sack coat.
4.  Civilian frock coat.
B.  Trousers - All button holes will be hand sewn.  Buttons will consist of wood, bone, "penny", thermo-plastic, tin, japanned tin, lead or pewter.  NO outlandish plaids or tartans for material.  No fall-front flies.
1.  Deep south depot pattern.
2.  Civilian trousers.
3.  Relief society trousers.
C.  Shirt - Machine sewn construction is fine with the exception of button holes.  Avoid usage of printed material, homespuns or dyed materials are best.  Buttons may consist of glass, mother-of-pearl, bone, brass (small), or thermo-plastic.
1.  Civilian shirt
2.  Confederate issue.
D.  Headgear
1.  Civilian slouch hat - Made of wool felt or beaver.  NO floppy, unblocked "hill billy" hats.  NO big feathers, coon peckers, Irish harps, outlandish hat brass.  Should be lined.
2.  Military kepi
3.  "Quilted" slouch hat - similar to Gen. Lee hat on page 171 of Echoes of Glory.
E.  Vest - optional usage.
1.  Civilian style made of linen, wool, woolen jeans, or silk.
2.  Military style made of wool, linen, or woolen jeans.
F.  Footwear - NO gaiters!
1.  Jefferson pattern brogans.
2.  Civilian oxfords
3.  Civilian mid-calf boots.  No knee-highs.
4.  Canvas-upper shoes.
G.  Eye glasses - period correct frames with small oval or round lenses.  No plastic nose pieces or ear pieces.
H.  Firearms - all firearms will be inspected to determine safe working order.  They should be clean and free of rust.
1.  Pattern 1853 Enfield rifle-musket.
2.  Model 1861 Springfield rifle-musket.
3.  Austrian Lorenz.
I  Accoutrements - You do not have to be uniformly accoutred.  Some men lacked bayonets, others knapsacks, etc.  Each item should be correctly constructed of appropriate materials.
1.  Cartridge Box - Deep south manufacture, pre-war musket, English made, M-1855.
2.  Cap Pouch - Deep south manufacture, English made,  M-1850, pre-war types.
3.  Waist Belt - Deep south manufacture, Civilian roller buckle, "Ga. frame", NO upside-down US "southern nation" belt plates.
4.  Canteen - Tin drum, wooden or US (captured).
5.  Haversack - Canvas, linen, carpeting, tarred, oil-cloth material.
6.  Knapsack - CS issue,  English made, Mexican War, or US (captured).
7.  Blanket - Civilian, English made, coverlet, US (captured).  Avoid quilts.
J.  Prohibited Items - A-frame tents, modern cigarettes, modern "rail road" bandannas, wrist watches, obviously modern pocket watches, pistols (enlisted), gaiters, etc.  Don?t use ANY modern anachronisms.
