Safety

Trampolining is not a dangerous sport, providing that some safety rules are followed:

• Always bounce when a BTF (British Trampolining Federation) coach is present- this way, if any accident does occur, you are covered by insurance

• ALWAYS have spotters- have at least four, at the sides of the trampolines (they aren’t usually needed at the ends of the bed, as end decks- crash mats- are usually in place). Spotters can assist you if you come too close to the edge of the trampoline

• Wear suitable clothing- e.g. shorts and t-shirt, or a leotard (although these are usually just worn in competitions!). Tracksuits are suitable to wear, but ones with zips aren’t!!!- The zips can dig into you! Also, footwear is important- always wear socks or trampoline shoes (which are rather like ballet shoes, if I remember correctly, although white- and not quite for dancing- you get the idea!). Never ever ever ever trampoline barefoot! Your toes can easily get caught in the webbing- modern trampolines tend to have rather large holes!

• Don’t wear jewellery! I know I guy who has had rather a lot of accidents when wearing jewellery- ranging from getting his nipple ring caught in the webbing (ouch!) to his eyebrow piercing- but luckily, they weren’t too bad!!! That’s enough of a warning to me! So please, please DON’T WEAR IT! His accidents could’ve been a whole lot worse!

• Be carefully when getting on and off the trampoline…avoid the springs, don’t jump off the trampoline on to the floor etc. Another point I should mention, although it sounds rather silly and I’m sure many people wouldn’t even consider it! - don’t somersault off the trampoline. It can hurt. A lot. Especially when you miss the mat you were meant to be landing on. (Not me, a friend! - even I’m not that silly!)

• Never do moves you have never tried before (or are still in the process of learning!) on your own! Your coach will move you on to more difficult moves when they think you are ready- remember, they won't tell you to do something they don't think you are capable of!

• Make sure you bounce in the middle of the trampoline- You should ‘kill the bounce’ (stop bouncing by bending your knees) if you stray to the side of the bed…trampolines tend to enjoy ‘pinging’ people from one end of the bed to the other, and you can easily lose control!

• And, one last point- you shouldn’t double bounce! (I admit this is A LOT of fun, but it can be dangerous! It always ends up with someone (the lighter person of the two!) being flung up into the air!)

Anyway, I don’t mean to lecture! But getting hurt isn’t fun!- I’ve only ever had minor accidents- landing on my neck after doing a barani wrong (which just shook me up a little) and doing some dodgy back drop/back summy manoeuvre (I think I was meant to be doing a back drop, but it went wrong! – I ended up landing on my face!!! Ouch!!!)
