2 to 3 Years (Playgroup Year)
1) At this age the child can start to read series such as the Ladybird Keyword Reading Scheme series of readers. Book 1 to 4 can be attempted over a period of 4 to 6 months.
2)Try either the a and b series. Leave the c series to a later stage. The a and b series approach reading as whole language learning whereas the c series uses the phonetic approach.
The whole language approach teaches recognition of words as a pattern of letters. Combined with the keyword reading scheme where words are repeated, words are committed to the child's memory.
Some prefer to start with the phonetic approach but this need not be so.
Make reading fun by talking about the story and asking the child questions to stimulate conversation with the child. This enhances the child's verbal linguistic development.
1) Toward the end of Book 4, the child can be initiated into readng simple readers such as Three Little Pigs, The Stupid Fox etc.
2) The idea here is to get the child now to appreciate the usage of words in the context of a story.
The key is to have a system. Stick to it for a while before giving up or switching to another approach.
Remember there is a learning curve.
Be patient. Learning is a marathon.
