Girraween National Park |
In September of 2002 Rohan and I got together again for another walkabout in the bush. This time he chose the location and made the necessary preparations which amounted to getting a map. We headed off to Bald Rock and Girraween National Parks which span the border of NSW and Queensland just north of Tenterfield. This was near the old stomping ground of the bushranger, Thunderbolt, so on the way we stopped off to see Thunderbolt's hideout. |

We drove to Bald Rock National Park as a base for the car. So our first task was to climb Bald Rock which is just a huge bald rock of granite. Ro was very impressed and just had to honour the rock by climbing it bare foot. It was pretty steep but I told Ro to lean forward just to try and make it look steeper. |
The view as we climbed was powerful. |
Some sides of Bald Rock were almost a cliff. It looked very muscular. |

We descended Bald Rock and plunged into the dry bush littered with huge boulders. The land is so rocky that they don't dig holes for fence posts here - they just pile rocks up around them. |
The picturesque scenery was filled with animal life all defending their own position within this world. |
The little water dragon was far more concerned about the stealthily approaching red-belly black snake than about our camera - in the end the black didn't stand a chance and took off when he noticed us. |
Little pied cormorant |

The ubiquitous wallaby |
This gecko had incredible markings |
The rock art of God |
On the second evening we ascended the pyramids for a bit of sunset meditation - a very steep climb. The name came from soldiers who were in training here for WWI and who thought the rock hills reminded them of their previous stint in Egypt |
Balancing rock is a very cool example of God's balancing abilities. This is quite a huge rock - the small tuft of grass to the left is actually waist high on a person. |
Ro among the rocks |
It was a great camp with very impressive scenery. Of course we had our usual geographical embarrassments but that didn't matter as I was with one of the finest men in all the world. Thanks heaps Ro. |
