Larapinta Trek
The Larapinta Trek is a 200+ km trail through the West MacDonnell Ranges, west of Alice Springs.  It covers mountainous desert country with spectacular scenery, rocky ground and cool "gaps."  By some strange twist of fate I found myself driving a coach-load of yr 9 students to this destination in August 2000.
Perhaps the "pinnacle" of the trip was climbing Mt Sonder, the tallest mountain with a half decent track, in the NT -  8km uphill (mostly).  I set myself a goal of trying to get up in 1hour.  It took me about 1hr20min.  I keep telling myself that when I fail to reach a goal it just makes victory all the more sweeter next time ...
My walking buddies - Justin, Robbie + Dwayne..  These guys were from the humid top end and found it strange when their lips went dry.  They had lots of fun spotting and chasing animals.
Mt Sonder - dry rock, spinifex and scrub as well as really cool views of dry rock, spinifex and scrub.
Some kids didn't like me.
Lisa sleeping at the top with the Finke? river and more ranges in the background.
Heading home - easier going through the scrub, a long way down.
