Races of Vana'diel |
ALTANA'S TEARS - During the dark ages of Vana'diel and its near destruction, the Goddess of Dawn Altana wept for the land, cleansing it. From her tears five new breeds of mortals were created. The Humes, the Elvaan, the Tarutaru, the Mithra, and the Galka. These new five races were her creation, they were her children. |
Hume Humes are the most populated race of Vana'diel. Male and female, they are of average build and height and can adapt to any environment. Hair colors tend to range from autumn colors of orange, brown, and blonde, to the common black. Humes are quite intelligent and excellent engineers however lack the strength of the Galka. Their abilities tend make them suitable for any job. However Humes tend to be greedy and selfish, often disregarding their friend, the Galka, as mere slaves. Hume names tend to sound a cross between American, English, and German. |
Elvaan Elvaan are a proud race of warriors, male and female. Tall and stocky, they have an elvish appearance including the long pointed ears. Their build and height make them ideal fighters as the jobs for Warrior, Paladin, Dark Knight, or Dragoon. Elvaans tend to have black or white hair, sometimes orange. Being a proud race, they often shun the other races as inferior beings and treat outsiders with disrespect. Elvaans possess some magical skill allowing them to study the magical arts. They are deep believers of Altana and her teachings feeling that when their time ends they will be allowed to join her through the Gates of Paradise. Elvaan names tend be long and have a french appeal. The males proud and strong, the females elegant and lovely. |
Tarutaru Tarutaru male and females never grow old in appearance. Their features are child-like and young throughout their entire lives. Tarutaru stand no more than two to three feet tall with frail body structures. Blonde or brown hair is common, often with the blondes having orange highlights. Other colors include orange, pale green, and dark to light grey. Males have messy hair that often sticks up while the females in buns or ponytails. Like the Elvaan, Tarutaru have long pointed ears with small brown noses. Tarutaru despite their appearances, are usually stubborn. While being frail in appearance their minds make up for their lack of strength and stamina. Gifted in the ways of magic they make excellent magic casters making up the majority of White, Black, and Red Mages. Their low health however makes them at risk often however they make up for it with a very high mana pool for magic casting. Summoners are also a common profession to the race. Tarutaru have a distinct way of speaking, usually rhyming certain words. Examples are "hellow-wellow", "goody-wood", "jealous-welous". In addition, they also add "aru" onto certain words ending or containing "t". "Getaruway", "congratarulations", "butaru", "itaru", and the popular "ta-taru" are examples. Tarutaru names are the most different of any race. Males usually rhyme their first and last or the last portion of both names are the same. "Tyre-Wyre", "Ajido-Marujido", "Baren-Moren", "Akio-Tikio" are examples. Females tend to have the last two syllables repeat like "Kiyaya", "Chamama", "Apururu", and "Tululu". |
Mithra A feline race, Mithra live in tribes usually governed by one Mithra. Mithra are an "all-female" race. Yet few, there are males who are in charge of taking care of the young while the females hunt, explore, and travel. Their main home is the Elshimo Island in a fishing village called Kazham. Mithra have slender, sleek, bodies with long legs. Everything from their ears protruding from the top of their heads, their facial features of cat noses and oval eyes, to their long slender tails and slinking walk represents that of a cat. Hair colors are usually red and orange, few blonde, brown, and a pale violet. Their feline reflexes and agility make them prime Thieves and Rangers. Their abilities are close to the Hume yet they are slightly weaker in strength and mental abilities so they could as well do any kind of job. However they have a low charisma so professions of Beastmaster and Bard are not best suited for this race. Mithra have a playful yet mischievous attitude, leaving them quite sneaky. Like the Tarutaru their speech is different from the other races. Mithra tend to roll their r's with three. An example may be "How arrre you today?", "I'm rrready to go hunt forrr some prrrey!", or "Rrreally? Interrresting..." Note not every Mithra roll their r's. Another is they perhaps will make a noise such as purring, meowing, or something to represent distaste. Mithran names generally contain many vowels and syllables. The letter "h" is a most frequently used one. "Hanaa Punaa", "Gioh Mishaupu", "Ami Zohronih", or "Ze Nomorph" are examples of this. When hunting Mithra only call each other by the first name so it tends to be short. |
Galka Galka are a muscular race. They are considered male but are commonly referred to as asexual. From the continent of Zepwell, these mighty beasts built a great city in the Altepa Desert. But their enemies the Anticans drove them from their homes to the mainland via an underground passage many hundred years ago. Galka are the tallest race with small heads and muscular grey bodies. They have black noses and their faces are generally covered in thick hair ranging from brown, grey, and black. Their massive thick tails thin at the tip to a point. With their immense strength and stamina they are excellent Monk and Warriors. However they greatly lack in mental and magical strength so magic casting jobs are not best suited for them. Galka are hard-headed and short-tempered believing the world is against them. After their escape from Zepwell they met up with the Humes who enlisted the Galka's great strength for tasks too hard for the Humes. Galka are like a native tribe believing in reincarnation and following the path of the one they call "The Taleweaver". Galkan names are like native American ones. "Iron Tail", "Great Oak", "Rushing Might", or "Angry Elk" could be examples pertaining to the personality and history of that Galka. They can sometimes have Hume names too however most Galka who accept a name given to them by a Hume are shunned by the rest of their race as throwing away their heritage. |
PROMATHIA'S RAGE - Upon creation of the five new races, the God of Twilight Promathia awoke and was enraged. He cursed greed, lust, jealousy, hatred, and fear upon them, and condemned them all to forever seeking power. In addition he from their own traits, created his own new breeds of beings, the Beastmen. Orc, Quadav, Yagudo, Antican, and Gigas. He instilled these creations with his rage and hatred for Altana's creations in a forever fight against each other. Seeing what he had done he forever bound himself in chains as an eternal punishment. |
Orc The mortal enemy of the Elvaan. The orcs are a vile disgusting race who thirst for power and bloodshed. Yellowish skin and milky white eyes they are the most primitive of races but somehow have learned to use bows and crossbow. They make their home in the fortress of Ghelsba in West Ronfaure. Their main base of Davoi, an old abbey of the Elvaan, is located deep in the Jugner Forest. Quadav These shellbacked turtle creatures live in the mines of Palborough located in North Gustaberg. They are the enemies of the Humes. These Beastmen mine the rich ore mountains of Gustaberg making weapons and armor they are possibly the most advanced race of the Beastmen. In deep marshes of Pashhow Marshlands lies the Quadav city of Beadeaux. Yagudo Enemy of the Tarutaru, these tall bird creatures are skilled in the arts of magic. Their home lies within the city of Giddeus, found in East Sarutabaruta. They are on peaceful terms with the Tarutaru who bring them food and drink offerings. However these black feathered Beastmen still terrorize the Tarutaru. Meripitaud Mountains is the resting place of the Yagudo's main stronghold, Castle Oztroja. Antican These giant ant-like Beastmen live in Altepa Desert. The once proud city of the Galka is now in ruins and their place of roaming. The Antican drove the Galka from Zepwell hundreds of years before to the mainland of Quon. Being sightless they track their prey by sound. Gigas Giant primitive brutes, these yellow pale-skinned Beastmen live on Qufim Island and reside in Delkfutt's Tower there. They were driven there during the Crystal Wars by the three nations under guidance of Jeuno. Dwindling in numbers the Gigas only attack those who roam into their territory. |
OTHER RACES - In addition to the races created by the two gods, several other inhabit Vana'diel. It is uncertain where they all come from but some are not as bad as the others. |
Goblin These small droopy-eared beings are never seen without their masks. Although considered Beastmen they are more civilized than the other races. While they do not like people, they willingly do business in the towns and cities across Vana'diel. Goblins can be seen selling off goods and and merchandise, it is even rumored some live in and run a shop located in Jeuno. But some still can be found wandering the highways and paths of the countrysides attacking adventurers. Moblin Cousins of the Goblin, Moblins are a newly discovered race living deep in the city of Movalpolos below the soil of Gustaberg. Purely miners, they hate any other race, including the Goblin. Their intelligence is said to rival the greatest scientists of Bastok and are far advanced in the study of Bionics. These Beastmen use physically enhanced creatures called Bugbears to do all the work rapidly speeding up their mining. Moblins are always on the move creating a mobile city. Movalpolos is never in the same place. Recently they have hired Goblins from above to protect their city from intruders. Tonberry Silent green frog-like men they are commonly seen wearing a brown linen coat carrying a lit lantern. Rarely seen from their home these creatures live in the ancient Temple of Uggalepih deep in the jungles of Elshimo Island. Never saying a word these creatures are hard to take down and one stab of their knives can mean a fatal death. Tonberries are known as assassins by some. Sahagin These small fishmen live in the depths of the Sea Serpent Grotto. Oblivious to sight they detect by sound. Heartless and savage, they won't think twice about giving final peace to anyone who crosses them. It is rumored they hunger for power and are quite adept at magic casting. Amongst them also live those who are skilled bards. Kuluu An ancient race created during the dawn of time by the gods. They were a peaceful race in tune with nature. It is unknown how but the race was said to have helped cause the near destruction of Vana'diel. As punishment, the race was condemned an awful fate. Nobody knows what happened to them... The Horutoto Ruins are said to be the remains of the ancient city formed by the Kuluu. Zilart Like the Kuluu, the Zilart were an ancient race however they hungered for power and were more skilled than the Kuluu in the art of magics. They fought with the Kuluu and even attempted to open the Gates of Paradise to be with their gods. Angered by this, the gods punished the Zilart. It's unknown what happened to their race but it is rumored two of the Zilart still remain to this day... The crags and even Delkfutt's Tower are claimed to be created by the Zilart. |
