| Choy Li Fut San Soo Form | ||||
| In the beginning stages, choy li fut san shou form movments are done long armed and in wide open motions to trainng the mind and body for more advance close range techniques. In addition, the rhythm should always be smooth, and flowing at a particular pace in a continuous motion without any breaks or over straining of the body. Usually, to achive this, a drum is used to set this pace. Later, as one learns the basic movments slight variations to this cadence is added to each individual motion. That is, some movements are fast, while other are done at a medium speed, and still other at a slower speed. This is because every movement in the form has its own nature and quality and can be compared to, and is very similar to the grammatical rules found in hand writing. This fine tuning is continued as one progresses up the ladder of maturity in order to teach the mind and body the natural way the body functions. In addition, the mind and body should be taught to relax, shoulder should drop and the head should lift upward. The movements themselves should be done as if you were standing in a pool of water (as if your limbs were meeting slight resistance). Concentration: The body is the tool of the mind. At no time can it be said that the body chooses to move on its own without the help of the mind. Thus, concentration upon every detail is of the utmost importance. All movement is directly related to the the mind. The mind directs the body and the body follows. This in turn develops concentration, will power and control over oneself, ones movements and in ones daily life. Slowness: The form is to be practiced by moving slowly and gently. The limbs are held lossely allowing the bodies blood and chi to circulation freely within. This allows the mind to concentrate and to be aware of the body every movement. It also allows the body to store up energy rather than depleting it. In addition, it is this slow motion that develops a calm mind. Fast, hard and aggressive develop an agitated mind and overactivate the heart. It is the philosophy of choy li fut san soo to prolong the life of the body through exercise, not to burn it out before its time through hard and constant workouts. Hard and powerful movements are only executed for an audience. Structure: Form structure is made up of a balanced arrangement of harmonious movments, with each being perfectly combined and placed together to teach the body how to move correctly, without fighting against itself. The type of forms we do are called "Buddha Saint Forms". These forms always start and end in the same place while moving in the same direction (counter clockwise (left to right in a circular motion)). This motion is used to effect the mind and body in a particular way, and was not chosen at random. In addition, forms that start, move and end differently each time, or move in the opposite direction, confuses the mind. Those that teach such form are unaware of the proper procedure of form mechanics. Hidden Moves Within all form movements are hidden moves that most practitioners either do not know about, or do not know how to employ. For instance. A long arm roundhouse movement can be applied in several ways; as a right forward hand strike; as a simultaneous right forward hand strike and a left rear hand strike; as a throwing technique in which the opponent is seized by the back of the neck, lifted by the groin, then thrown in a circle (circle throw). In addition to these, the forms are load with hidden Chin Na, Leg and Hand Throws, and Choke technique. However, these hidden hand gesture are not usually taught to the general public, but rather only to family members, or closed students. |
