I know some people have done some research into this before, but with the help of Mishal and Stigwald I gave it a whirl as well.

I used my newly born alt Tlayawaworht, as it sounded like it would be a dangerous task.

He died twice, but with the following conclusion:

When you get a message along the lines of "You feel a mild twinge...", you get damage. This damage doubles each time:

1 hp the first, 2 the second, 4 the third... All the way up to 512hp for the 9th. The tenth time I got a message it killed me.

I got the messages and the subsequent damage roughly every 100 seconds.

After six times "You feel a mild twinge...", two "You feel a sharp stabbing..." and two "Your eyes bulge...", this is the highest message Tlayawaworht got:

Your whole body goes rigid with the thunderous detonation of pain taking place behind your eyes.

What my research actually looked like

Apostle took my research a little further, as the alt I used only had a limited amount of hp:

1024	Apostle goes rigid in sudden pain and cries out loud.
2048	Apostle goes rigid in sudden pain and cries out loud.
4096	Apostle goes rigid in sudden pain and cries out loud.
