LAW

General Research | Copyright Law | International Law

As a law student, I have been inundated with the law, cases, black-letter law, outlines, papers and research.

To help a few fellow students and those with more than a passing curiosity of the law, I have compiled a few links to aid the process of research within the legal profession.

Note:

On a question from a friend of a friend, I tried to look up cases dealing with non-disclosure of a multiple murder of previous tenants. Only one appears to be on point. For those who have morbid curiosity, check out Stambovsky v. Ackley, (1991) 572 N.Y.S.2d 672.

GENERAL RESEARCH:

Findlaw.com

For research on recent cases, trends, or even to enter a legal chatroom, Findlaw has it all.  Sign-up for free, and you can access to all chatrooms and you can also personalize your opening page to feature those types of law that you are interested in or practice.  With up to date information, this is one of the best online legal sources that you can get without a charge.  One Caveat, however, when I say recent, I mean cases within the past two to three years.

Martindale-Hubbell

A great source of information about the partners, associates and of counsel in most major Law Firms, Governmental Offices, and a few Corporate Legal Departments.

CA Department of Occupational Safety and Health Appeals Board

For those who are curious about the procedures and Board decisions regarding the enforcement of the Cal/OSHA act.

INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY:

The Digital Millenium Copyright Act

This is an amendment to Title 17, the Copyright Act, furthering the attempts to comply with the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), addressing Intellectual Property on the Web. This LENGTHLY act is from research via Westlaw and contains the act as read to Congress on Aug. 4, 1998. Last word is that it passed the Senate last week. WARNING: This document is LONG!

THE UNITED STATES COPYRIGHT OFFICE

A link to the US Copyright Office. For those interested in the DMCA, the USCO contains a brief guide to interpreting the DMCA.

INTERNATIONAL LAW:

The New Japanese Copyright Law

I did a paper on this topic in regards to the effects of the new amendments on Intellectual Property over the Internet. Not my best paper, but the process exposed me to new sites for looking up information on new and relevant international law. This site offers the new Copyright Law in both English and Japanese.
