William Wheeler, born in Dallas, Texas in 1968. Attended High School and College in North Texas. Williams vocations have ranged from carpentry to information technology. After 14 years of painting in oils, in 2002 William decided to make major changes in his life. He quit his corporate day job and decided to go back to college and pursue his BFA in Studio Arts with an emphasis in Sculpture, and intends to complete his MFA. This major shift in media and dimensionality has opened new avenues of expression that were previously unavailable to him as a painter. Williams recent works in stone reflect the loss of a dear friend in 2006. Pieces such as Cantankerous Old Goat and RobertŐs Failure are works directly related to personality loss and dementia, which his friends suffered from. In addition to personal experience, Williams work is influenced by masters of Biomorphic sculpture such as Barbara Hepworth, Jean Arp, Henry Moore, Isamu Noguchi, and many others. Minimalism and Post Modern movements have also had major influence on Williams work. William struggles with a dichotomy of geometric and organic, concrete and forrest, complex and simple. These themes constantly play out in Williams work and should be considered when viewing his sculpture. |
