Nightmare 7
The Garage.
The time had come to trade my car for a newer model so it was a round of looking at suitable vehicles at local garages. I soon discovered that a woman looking for a car on her own is very different from a man looking .The salesman would ignore details such as engine size and performance which might affect the insurance costs.but instead advised me of the colours you can have, safety features, the power steering and best of all the illuminated vanity mirror. At last a deal was struck and the savings account raided. Grabbing the file of documents for the old car I turned up to collect the new one. All went well papers signed from the new one and the money handed over. It was only when the salesman looked at me a bit strangely that I looked at the old papers he was holding. The old car was registered in my male name yet here was a woman buying a new car and trading her old one. ER he should sign this the man said, Oh I said my brother had it and gave it to me, can I sign on his behalf?
The salesman seemed hesitant, so I said I could take it away and get him to sign, as that would be simplest rather than hold this up any further. He agreed, so I walked out of the showroom and went to the local park where I signed the paper in my old name. Shortly after returning to the garage, I passed the document to the girl on reception and another salesman handed me the keys to my new car having said I'll show you where everything is. Sitting in the driver’s seat I could see him looking at me studiously, Uh oh a date or read? My brain considered. Suddenly he became more matter of fact, switch for wipers, seat adjustment knobs are down here, illuminated vanity mirror in the sun visor. I guess he had read me but politely his face showed no sign of intrigue or puzzledness.
Smiling politely the hand over done I drove carefully off the forecourt and home.
After such a narrow escape I returned home and resolved to check all my official documents as I hoped my old status could be buried away in the past and I could get on with my life.
