The case of the Mistaken Identity
">
Like many other Girls,I have a bit of a loathing about visiting the Doctors,
but having recently moved to a new area I decided to register with a new practice.
Having found out where I had to go ,I made an appointment to register my name and on the chosen afternoon presented myself. I had chosen to wear a long skirt and T shirt with a cardigan beneath my coat.Having given my name to the receptionist I took a seat in the waiting room and turned my attentions to a 'dog eared'magazine at least 6 months out of date.Whilst immersed in a short story i was aware that a Nurse was standing by me. Please come through Mrs Tompkins she asked politely, so grabbing my bag and coat I follwed the earnest
but jovial lady to an examination room. How are you feeling she asked, I smiled weakily, just fine, oh thats good she said, No feeling of nausea or sickness.
Again I smiled No I haven't adding which is just as well I'm a poor patient.
As the questioning ceased momentarily I sat bemused, i thought I meet a doctor, say Hi,probably be examined and set off home.
The Nurse continued I haven't seen you before have I,new to the area aren't you.
Yes I replied.Let me fill in this form then continued the Nurse.
After questions on general health age and weight, she continued ,Your menstural cycle? when was your last period? Some time ago wasn't it,amazing that you hardly show at this date.I ballooned all over.
Without pausing she went on to say when are you due?
Oh my , I thought here I am being asked if I'm pregnant, that would be a miracle.
At this moment a breathless recptionist knocked and appeared at the door and brought in a Pregnant lady. Peggy she added this is Mrs Tompkinson, she insisted you were doing a check up today, not the doctor.
I pulled my things together and said I thought I was seeing the doctor this afternoon,so can I see the doctor now.
Shortly afterwards I met my new doctor a kindly faced man, who chuckled at the story of the mixup, and added that it would have been interesting to know how I would have fared in the class of exppectant mothers. It broke the ice,I'm pleased to say and after a discuusion on my life as a Transgendred woman(my Doctor not having met one before)he carried out a brief checkup before I left, to pick up my car in the carpark where I met the expectant mother who asked if I was having a baby, I said no I'm not, actually I had gone into to register as a patient,my chances of having a baby are a long way off.
Oh I'm sorry for you she said, well they can do all kinds of things today, so don't give up hope.
