Our Politically Correct World
What would a site like this be without a section on the political corectness of America. These days people never call anything what it is anymore. We make our names technical. Why? So we can sound more important. But when you come right down to it, you have the same job, disability, abnormality, etc. you did before you changed it's name.
It all started with the builders. They didn't like their name. It didn't sound like a worthwhile job. They had it changed to construction engineers. Sounds famcy right? You can't even tell what a construction engineer is can you? Bet you know what a builder is. That's right, a guy who builds stuff.
Then came the stewardesses. First they changed their name to flight attendants. We thought they were done. But no. Apparantly flight attendant wasn't a good enough name, so we had to change it to flight comfort providers. A flight comfort provider. Sounds like that pillow they give you.
From then, other jobs that had never, ever thought that their name might not be adequate enough began following suit and changing theirs. Babysitters became child caretakers. Doctors became medical physicians. Teachers are education providers. And so on. Did any of the original professions sound bad to you? I personally have no problem with builders, stewardesses, babsitters, doctors, or teachers. None of them have a negative connotation.
From there, certain abnormalities began changing their names. Short people are vertically challenged. The handicapped are the differently abled. Fat people are gravitationally challenged. ?I hate to say this, but it doesn't matter if you change the name of whatever you have. In the end, the vertically challenged, the differently abled, and the gravitationally challenged are still short, handicapped, and fat. To quote George Carlin, "Midgets and dwarfs are not little people. Children are little people. Nor are they vertically challenged. Skydivers are vertically challenged. Midgets and dwarfs are just midgets and dwarfs."
I think many people are ashamed of what they are. They feel their jobs and abnormalities make them inferior to other people, so they tag a new name over their original title and it makes them feel better. If it really does make you feel better to change your title then go ahead. I won't stop you. But remember that you have nothing to be ashamed of. Embrace who you are, and accept the life you were given.
