On June 1, 1936, Sr. Suzanne SPC, Sr.
Salvacion SPC, Fr. Florencio de Leseun, OFMCap., and Mrs. Maria
Gutierrez founded a charitable learning institution – the Immaculate
Conception Institute. This
marked the beginning of St. Anthony School and its devotion to Mary,
the Immaculate Conception. The Institute had its humble beginnings offering kindergarten,
primary and intermediate elementary education, with only four teachers
and a directress-principal.
Three more teachers were added in 1938 due to an increase
in the school population.
The school plant consisted only of a two-storey wooden structure,
a canteen, a clinic, a library and a laboratory.
World
War II (1942) and the Japanese Occupation temporarily disrupted
the classes. In 1945,
during the liberation, the school building was totally damaged by
the fire. But this
did not stop the school from pursuing.
In 1946, the school was re-opened.
Classes were held at the ground floor of the convent of the
Capuchins and in rented rooms in different houses along Dart and
Anakbayan streets. The
teachers went house to house and invited the parents to send their
children to school. Public
School teachers from Pasay came to help out in the afternoon classes.
Elementary Education was offered.
The sisters of St. Paul of Chartres and their lay collaborators
took the task of rehabilitating the school during these postwar
years. Under the support
and guidance of their Capuchin Pastor, the pupils and teachers help
in the Parish celebrations of the Eucharist and devoted themselves
to learning.
The
school developed under the administration of the sisters that in
1948, the government under the name Singalong Parochial School officially
recognized the school. In
1956, the Sisters of St. Paul of Chartres formally turned over the
newly developed school to the administration of the Capuchin Fathers
and continued to assist them in the administration of the school. A three-storey building was constructed in 1959 through the
effort of Archbishop of Manila, the Capuchins, the St. Paul Sisters
and the parish community.
The
year 1960 marked the expansion of the school.
The High School Department was opened.
Singalong Parochial School earned popularity for offering
quality education. In 1961 the school’s name was changed to St. Anthony School
in honor of the patron saint of the parish.
Through
the years, the school continues to make waves in the academic circles
and produce successful graduates in various disciplines.
The school also expanded both in size and number.
St. Anthony School continuously moved on to effect changes
to its academic community providing quality education responsive
to the needs of the times.
The
Capuchins formally turned over the administration of the school
to the Diocesans so that they may concentrate on their mission work.
On April 1, 1995, under the jurisdiction of His Eminence
Jaime Cardinal Sin, the first Diocesan Priest was appointed as Parish
Priest-Director of St. Anthony. With these new developments, the school looks forward to the
pursuit of its goals to become a fully integrated Catholic center
of learning and evangelization.
