The first Labor Day parade occured in New York City on Tuesday, Sept. 5, 1882. It was sponsored by the Central Labor Union of New York and included as many as ten thousand working people. After that a number of states recognized the holiday. Finally, in 1894, 12 years after the first Labor Day, the federal government made it a holiday for federal workers.
Today we give special thanks
for all Your blessings: for our country, our family,
and our friends -- all those through whom
You, Oh Lord, show us Your kindness and love.
For all that has been: Thank You, Lord!
For all that will be: Yes Lord!
Amen.
