GRAND-PRÉ

It was the lush fertile lands that first attracted Acadians from the Port-Royal area to migrate to Grand-Pré in the latter half of the seventeenth century. By the time Acadians were arrested and forced into exile, the village of Grand-Pré and the other surrounding communities around Minas Basin had grown to become the nucleus of Acadian population within the colony.

By the beginning of the twentieth century, Grand-Pré was gaining international recognition due to the growing popularity of Evangeline, an epic poem by the Massachusetts author, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. In this 1847 American classic, Longfellow recounts the story of the deportation through the lives of Evangéline and Gabriel, a young couple living in Grand-Pré. Soon to be wed, they were nevertheless separated in the hysteria and confusion of being forced upon ships bound for unknown lands. Although the heroine would spend much of her life searching for her betrothed, it is only on Gabriel's death-bed that the couple would be reunited for a brief moment before the hand of death closed the door on a love never consumed. Both the poem and the setting where events unfolded were destined to earn their place in the annals of Acadian history.

Today, part of Grand-Pré is a national historic site devoted to the memory of the tragic events of two and a half centuries. Amid multicoloured flowers and majestic willow trees stands a memorial church constructed on the site where the St. Charles parish church stood in 1755. In front of the church, down the green path, the statue of Évangéline boldly rises from its granite pedestal and beckons you to stop, pause a while, and remember.

Mural Sponsor

During the November 2001 Board of Directors meeting of the Acadian Memorial Foundation, President Shirley T. LeBlanc, of Famille de Thibodeaux Association donated $2000 to the Acadian Memorial Foundation for sponsorship of Olivier Thibodeaux, who is represented on the mural.

French Immersion

As part of our association commitments to assist in promoting the French language and culture, French books and teaching supplies were delivered to St. Martin Parish Schools in the Spring of 2001. Famille de Thibodeaux and Les Dupuis Toujours each contributed $200.00 Shirley and John Allen LeBlanc contributed $500.00 to CAFA’s French Immersion Project. The project of supplying books, teaching supplies and etc. is being sponsored by CAFA.

Schools that participated in the French Immersion program of promoting French were:  Cecilia Primary School, Teche Elementary School, Cecilia Jr. High, and Cecilia High School.

Sainte-Famille Cemetery Committee Launches Buy-A-Brick Campaign

Falmouth, N.S.,  The Committee for the Preservation of Sainte-Famille Cemetery,  dedicated to the preservation of Sainte-Famille Cemetery, has announced plans for the development of a memorial walkway.  In an effort to attract more visitors to this beautiful historic site, the committee has developed a Buy-A-Brick Campaign, which will allow the construction of a commemorative walkway using personalized bricks.

Continuing efforts to restore this cemetery leads the not for profit organization to present innovative fundraising efforts. "Moving forward to the year 2004, all Acadians can start this new year right by dedicating a brick in their own name or in memory of an Acadian ancestor. Friends of Acadians can do the same! We want to proudly show that we are preserving our history and culture", suggests co-president Lucille Amirault.

Located in Falmouth, N.S., this pre-1755 burial ground was discovered during the excavation of a building lot. An in depth archaeological assessment has confirmed the Acadian connection to this long, forgotten cemetery. The Committee for the Preservation of Sainte-Famille Cemetery was created in 1997 after which the lot was purchased. This site has become a peaceful reminder of  these early settlers of Nova Scotia. It is hoped this culturally important historic site will become a place for visitors to reflect on their ancestry and find a feeling of connection to Nova Scotia soil.

The bricks are available for $50.00 Canadian ($35.00 U.S.).  Order forms can be received online at stefamille@hotmail.com or by contacting  Lucille Amirault – (902) 765-4740 or Donna Doucet – (902) 542-3631
