Dear Greg, I am concerned about the misleading information that you have on this website about James A. Rowell. I am a descendant of his as well. I am a first cousin to Dennis Lewis who help's you from time to time. First, James was not born in 1804. Second, he was not on the trail of tears. Third, he was not on the Henderson nor the Dawes Rolls. There was a Rowell on there but it was not James. There were several Rowell's who applied but declined. Fourth- he did not escape. He was too busy making babies.... Fifth- He had only 2 wives, not three. Six- He was less than 100 years old when he died. I am writing a book on the Rowell family which will be published in a few months. All of this information will be in detail.... Sincerely, Carolyn Rowell Haigler

Phil Hunter, Jr.

Mar 1, 2001 20:14

Hi, I am hoping that someone can help me get beyond a brick wall. My ggGrandfather was William HUNTER who first appears in an 1870 census for Appling county, Georgia USA. He is listed as 20 years old and born in New Jersey. The birth place (NJ) may not be true, as he was living at this time in the home of his future in-laws who WERE in fact from NJ. The family was James and Ruth Wood DECKER, and their children: Fred, Elmira, and George. William was listed as a laborer. His nickname was Bill. He later married Elmira DECKER, and had the following children: Benjamin Franklin (my gGrandfather) about 1872, Lula about 1876, Sallie about 1877, Sarah about 1878, Charles about 1879, William about 1882, and Hattie about 1889. William HUNTER left Elmira Decker HUNTER about 1890, and family history says that his wagon was found near Darien, Georgia (Camden County), near Brunswick. At first he was presumed dead, but the family found out that he had gone on to have another family in Florida. Possibly the Nassau, St.Johns, or Duval area. Some members of the new family were found eventually, but the information has been lost. So where he ended up being buried is a mystery. What we (the others who are also searching) would like to find out is 1)where his final resting place was, and 2)who his parents were. We think that his parents may have been a Benjamin and Sarah HUNTER since there is a family as such listed in the 1850 Appling County, Georgia census with a William listed as age 2. Then it looks like this same family shows up in the 1860 Telfair County, Georgia census living with a Peter and Catherine WHITE. William is listed as age 12. This Benjamin HUNTER in both census records is listed as originating in England, and Sarah originating in Georgia. However, we can only guess about these being our William HUNTER's parents because there are so many Hunter's in Georgia at this time. If anyone recognizes this line, please let me know. I am grateful for any efforts.

I am researching my paternal grandmother's family line. Her name was Lucille Averdell Johns, and she was born in Clinch County, Georgia in 1905. Her parents' names were Dallas and Sallie Johns. She was the youngest of three children -- the oldest being a daughter named Ethel, and a son named Dessie. Her father, Dallas Johns, was born in Georgia and her mother, Sallie, was born in South Carolina. If anyone has any information about this family, I would greatly appreciate it if you would share it with me. Thank you!

New Websites for Family Puzzlers and Heritage Papers! Has anyone in S E Ga come across listings of Bible records published in FAMILY PUZZLERS, the weekly genealogy magazine edited by Mary Bondurant Warren from 1964 until 1998? I thought that HERITAGE PAPERS went out of business when Mrs. Warren stopped publishing Puzzlers the end of 1998. Not so!! I recently found the new websites for HERITAGE PAPERS as well as for FAMILY PUZZLERS, TNG, the monthly magazine edited by Mrs. Warren’s daughter Amy Warren Sanders! Most of the items that Heritage Papers used to advertise in their annual catalog are still available, including back issues of the quarterly magazines GEORGIA GENEALOGIST and CAROLINA GENEALOGIST, lots of historic maps, as well as source materials for Virginia, North and South Carolina, and Georgia. Some bound volumes of Family Puzzlers are still available. For Heritage Papers, go to http://www.galaxymall.com/books/heritagepapers For Family Puzzlers, The Next Generation, go to http://www.galaxymall.com/books/familypuzzlers I just thought you’d like to know, I did!! Interested in locating any information concerning the decendents of James T Peacock and Mary Chancey, married in 1849 in Duval County Florida. James died of disease at Camp Winder Hospital, Richmond Va., in September, 1862. Mary 'Chancey' Peacock was last found in the 1880 Charlton County census. Their children were: Abraham Peacock b. April 1854, reported to have married Josephine Peeples and settled in Ware County, Ga. Samuel Peacock b. Abt. 1858. no further info. John R Peacock b. May 1860. no further info. Rebecca Peacock b. 1860. no further info. It appears all of the children were born in Pierce County, Ga. By 1880, Mary (Polly) Peacock only had John and Rebecca in her HH, besides her brother Asa and niece, Phorbe Chauncey. Anything for these decendents of James and Mary, or of Mary Peacock herself would be appreciated. Thanks. James was born about 1826, and Mary about 1829.

I'VE JUST BEGUN TO RESEARCH MY SOUTH GEORGIA ROOTS. I WONDER IF ANYONE KNOWS THE ADDRESS AND LOCATION OF A CEMETERY IN DAWSON, TERRELL COUNTY-CALLED OLD SARDIS CHURCH CEMETERY. THIS CEMETERY IS LISTED ON THE ROOTSWEB TOMBSTONE PAGE FOR TERRELL, BUT HASN'T BEEN SURVEYED I GUESS BECAUSE THERE IS ONLY THE NAME.THE INFO THAT I FOUND IS THAT MY GR GR GRANDFATHER AND GR GR GRANDMOTHER, BENJAMIN TARPLEY SMITH AND ELIZABETH JONES SMITH ARE BURIED THERE.I DON'T KNOW DEATH DATES YET, BUT WOULD BE BEFORE 1900, I THINK. BENJAMIN SMITH'S SON, MY GR GRANDFATHER LEFT GEORGIA IN 1875 BY WAGON TRAIN AND SETTLED IN TEXAS. THERE WAS ALSO SOMETHING ABOUT THE OLD GEORGE HART HOME IN SHELLMAN, GEORGIA. I WOULD ASSUME IT IS NO LONGER THERE. I BELIEVE GEORGE HART WAS BENJAMIN SMITH'S SON-IN-LAW. WOULD APPRECIATE ANY INFO THAT ANYONE MIGHT HAVE. THANK YOU--MARY BETH MARCHANT

Newton Stewart...Mary Crews..Ware County, Georgia

Jul 3, 2001 21:43

Ware,Wayne,Pierce County, Georgia

Need information about Newton Stewart, born c.1822 Wayne County, Georgia...son of James B. Stewart and Catherine Courtney Keightley Stewart (Raulerson).Newton married Mary Crews..born c. 1822-1824. about 1843. I don't know who Mary's father and mother were, but she named one of her sons Isham Stewart, which leads me to believe she is related to Isham Crews. They were living in New River, Florida in the 1840's and moved back to Blackshear in the 1850's. They left Blackshear in the early 1860's and were in Duval County, Florida, then Volusia,County, florida, then Orange County,Florida, finally settling in Lake and Sumter County, Florida, where they died in 1895. Their children married into the McLaughlin, Tomlinson, and Pellicier Family. When James B. Stewart died c.1827, his wife Catherine Courtney Keightley married Jacob Raulerson, c.1828 in Wayne County Georgia. The Stewart children were raided in the home of Jacob Raulerson. Their names were Elias Fort, Catherine, Franklin and Newton Stewart. Catherine married a Waldron and moved to Lake City Florida. Elias Fort Stewart married a Strickland and lived in Blackshear, Georgia. Franklin was a Methodist Minister and married Francis Sanchez in Duval County, Florida. Newton married Mary Crews. Any information would be appreciated about Mary or Newton.

I was wondering if anyone could tell me the meaning of the name "Satilla"? I am named after the Satilla River, but I have not been able to find out the meaning. I was told the name came from the Mocama tribe, probably. I also read that the river was named by an officer of the spanish army named Saint Illa and was later shorten to Satilla. My e-mail is SATGRIZ@PRODIGY.NET if anyone has any information on this pleas e-mail me. Thanks Satilla.

http://www.istal.com/fraziersbooks/Morgan-Frazier.htm

We are currently trying to locate our ancetors in Georgia. Like most Black Families – our family history can be traced back to the days of slavery. On the Morgan side, our foreparents, Alexander and Sarah Wells Morgan, were born into slavery, and spent their early years in Telfair County Georgia. On the Frazier side, Sidney and Bessie Frazier came from the Wayneville and Red Cap communities (Camden County). Bessie was a full-blooded Seminole Native American; therefore, it is not know whether she was a slave. All of our ancestors died in the early years of the 20th century, with Grandpa Alex having lived longest – dying in Screven at age 107 in the mid ‘30’s. Grandma Bessie was married three times; hence, the surnames, Lattany, Hart, and Frazier. The Life, Smith, Demery, Deloach, Clinch and other relatives from the Camden and Glynn County area are from the Frazier side of the family. The Harley, Ward, Scott, Baker, Schenck and families from the Candler, Lowndes and Wayne Counties are from the Morgan branch of the family. The Gaffney, Cunningham, Dixon, Jones, Powell, Douglas, Woodard, Harris, Frazier and their descendants are related to both sides of the family. Therefore, those four black men and women born during the oppressive and inhumane days of slavery are the progenitors of a large and prosperous family scattered all over these United States, will always remember them with love and thanksgiving. Indeed, the very soil that they once walked upon as slaves; we now own it as free and proud black men and women! Their labor and legacy left to us was not in vain. Thank you

Where does the Charlton name come from? I have a great, great uncle named Charlton F. Butler, he was a twin of Hardee Hampton Butler. They were both born in June 1866. My great, great grandfather, HHB, was probably named after 2 famous Southern leaders of the period, Generals Hardee and Wade Hampton. I know there is a Charlton County, were the Charlton's early pioneers or was there a famous "Charlton" of the 1860s? PHB

You may be interested in reviewing my book which I donated to the Huxford Genealogical Library in Homerville a few years ago. It is titled, "John and Priscilla Inman, Their Family and Related Families". I do not have a computer, but my address is 6331 Kenny Road, Jacksonville, FL 32254 and my telephone number is (904)783-1861. I am visiting with my friend Judy Drawbond and she is looking up the Irwin Boothe (married to Margaret Rives Knowles) family on the internet. I am interesting in inviting them to the Inman Family Reunion. I am legally blind so limited in my activities but my mind is very clear and much information included in my book was based on information passed on to me by my mother. I still have a great interest in family, especially anything relating to John Inman who was a co-founder of the Kettle Creek Methodist Church in Waycross. Feel free to call me.

According to grave markers, his parents were William and Mary (Williams) Wincey. I have reason to believe his father's name was James E. Wincey. If there is someone interested or has this information, could they please contact me. I am looking for any Wincey information from Wayne County during the 1820's and 1830's. I have reason to believe Isaac had 4 brothers, and likely all born in Wayne County as well. Your help is greatly appreciated. Best regards Dan J. Wincey Bedford, Nova Scotia, Canada

According to Texas census records, both were born in GA, as were their first two children, John Washington Day II b. 1835, and Elizabeth Jane Day, b. 1836. John (the father) came to Texas in 1835 and used the name "Cochran" rather than "Day". He was killed on February 1, 1841. A few months later, my gr- grandfather, William Weatherford Day, was born. When Susan Day re-married, in Dec. 1846, she was married under the name "Susan Cochram" or "Cochran". John Washington Day's probabe is listed under the name "John W. Cochran". I have been searching for the Georgia origins of this couple since 1990! Will appreciate any help.

I am trying to get information on my gg grandparents family. They were Carrie Belle Wainwright(1885-1968) and John Henry Dunlap(1882-1959). They are both buried at Turner Chapel Cemetery in Taylor Co. They lived in Taylor Co. (farmer) & Macon, GA (after retirement). I have been able to obtain Carrie's parents John Wainwright & Roxanne Stringfellow from her death certificate. But none of the Wainwright connections seem to have records for carrie or her parents. John is a different issue. His death certificate didn't name parents, but his obit named Enoch Wainwright as his 1/2 brother. Once again, none of the wainwright or Dunlap connections seem to have records for him. I have an early picture of them and of course a later one taken in the 1950's. I also have a picture of what is believed to be John's mother as well as a small picture of "our homeplace and visitors" believed to be taken on the "Wainwright farm" in Taylor Co. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Lee, Pickett, Rolison

Lee, Pickett, Rolison Genealogy; A Summary Compiled and Written by Jan Rolison Farren, Indianapolis, Indiana, 2003 "...In all of us is a hunger, marrow deep, to know our heritage to know who we are and where we have come from. Without this enriching knowledge, there is a hallow yearning. No matter what our attainments in life, there is still a vacuum, and an emptiness, and the most disquieting loneliness..." ---Alex Haley-- Several years ago, I started researching the Lee/Rolison/Pickett/ Meggs lineage from which many reading this descend. Although, far from complete I felt the need to compile and assimilate the findings thus far. The research is a combination of many sources. Perhaps, the most significant is that of my sister Ruth Rolison Denison who began our family research back in the late 60s and 70s as part of her fulfillment to the LDS/Mormon Church of which she is a member. One of the church's tenet is that families are eternal, they do not end at death. as part of church doctrine, it is a religious obligation to identify their ancestors and link themselves to those ancestors. Members must make special covenants with their ancestors that will unite them for eternity. In doing the initial research, Ruth was fortunate to have an opportunity to speak with and documented oral histories of two of the oldest living descendants; Effie Cora Rolison Kemp (Fresno, California), granddaughter of George W/E Rollison and only surviving child of Benjamin Franklin Rolison and Elizabeth Jane "Betty" Fleming, and our aunt Lela Belle Hutchinson Barnes (Columbus, Georgia) granddaughter of  William Levi (Levy) Lee and Josephine A. Pickett; daughter of Ida Mae Tillery Lee. Ruth's early research provided a springboard on which I have used to dive into the family genealogy you'll find here. In actuality, the material summarized in these pages is only a modest start. Yet, I wish to share with all those of like mind and sincere interest something of our shared and collective family history.  Where possible, and if permitted, I have included sources and listed the contact information. By so doing I hope to provide a small window to our past which may let in a bit of light and spark an interest in some of you to delve deeper into our small but unique clan and help decipher the role we've all played in a certain place and time. It is time to sit down and reminisce with our older kinfolk be they grandparents, great-grandparent, granduncles, grandaunts, great-granduncles, great grandaunts, older first and second cousins, and even older neighbors and acquaintances of these people. It is time to pull out that old forgotten box of family mementos, family photographs, and records and start sharing the valuable information with others. You never know when a photograph or an old letter might bring to light a clue or lead someone else has been looking for years.   It is time to share what we know about ourselves and our families, no matter how small or insignificant we might feel the contribution to be! It is time to search for and locate those old family cemeteries that will surely be gone in years to come. It is time to reconnect with living relatives both near and far as we learn more about our family's origins. It is time to gain pride in ourselves, our family and our heritage. It is time! OUR ANCESTORS Below are brief profiles of key ancestors which are currently being researched. Where possible I have include birth and death dates, and geographical locations. As the information that is presented here has come from many sources, and the spelling sometimes varies dependent upon the source, you would be well advised to look under all possible spellings. Always take phonetics into consideration. For example: The surname Rolison is also spelled Rawlinson, Rollinson, Raulerson, Raufson, Rollison, Rawinson. Likewise the name Pickett can be spelled Piggot (French pronunciation) Piggott, Picket; the surname Lee can be spelled Lea, Leigh,…etc. William Levi (Levy) LEE born 1846 Leetown (?) North Carolina died in Midway, Alabama 1925. Buried in Pinkard, Alabama, place UNKNOWN. Son of Sampson LEE and Suzanne UNKNOWN. Below is part of the 1910 Dale County Alabama Census...with William Levi LEE and Josephine PICKETT listed online 172. Also listed is my Aunt Lela Belle (Hutchinson) Barnes, age 13, who lived with William and Josephine after her mother Ida Mae Tillery LEE married my grandfather George Emmett Rolison. I am unable to show the complete document but it does show that Josephine PICKETT was born in Florida and William Levi LEE was born in North Carolina. Here William's age is recorded as 60 and Josephine's as 45. Both of these ages are incorrect or at least do not reconcile with the records we got from  Lela Belle Hutchinson Barnes, nor, do they, reconcile with the census records provided in this document. Josephine's death record show a different age as well. With this document we do know conclusively that our LEE line resided in Dale County, Alabama in the early 1900s. Aunt Lela was again right about the family moving from Pike County, Alabama to Dale County, Alabama around 1900. William Levi (Levy) LEE is the father of Acie Greenberry LEE, Ida Mae Tillery LEE, and Robert LEE; other children may include Cader LEE, Lemuel LEE, and Helen LEE. Josephine A. PICKETT born 1848 Quincy, Gadsden County, Florida. Died 1929, Columbus, Georgia. Buried Pine Grove Cemetery, Phenix City, Alabama. Daughter of Asa (Acie) PICKETT and Martha Ann (Carter?). (See attached death record.) Josephine was the 5th daughter born to Asa Pickett and Martha Ann Carter (?). Josephine PICKETT married William Levi (Levy) LEE in Duval, County Florida, 1877? She was the mother of Acie Greenberry LEE, Ida Mae Tillery LEE, and Robert LEE. There is some indication that Josephine Pickett's family may descend from the early Florida settler John Seymour Pickett. Seymour Pickett was one of the first signers for Florida to become a territory of the United States. After Florida became a territory in 1821, Pickett petitioned the government for and was granted the 640 acres on Sibbald's Tract in Duval Co.,that he had settled. It was called Lains Branch and is now part of Lane Avenue in Jacksonville. There is a bridge there now called Pickett's bridge, bounded on the north by Trout River (now at Dinsmore). He settled the area of Lane Avenue and Old Kings Road and it became known as Pickettville. In 1821, he was given the right to keep his Duval and Nassau County lands. Pickett Road, south of Callahan is part of that land grant, also. John Seymour Pickett, II b. 1774, Virginia, occupation Seminole War Veteran, m. (1) Rebecca Collier, m. (2) 22-Mar-1798, Maria (Mary) A. B. Pons, b. 26-JUL-1791, St. Johns County, St. Augustine, Fl, (daughter of Juan Pons and Juana Catherine Andreu). John died 1847 or 1848, Pickettville, Duval Co., Fl, buried: Plummer Cemetery, Duval County. Seymour and his bride, Rebecca, came by ship from Charleston, SC to Savannah, GA where they boarded the ship of Capt. George Murray. He was heading a colony to settle in Florida, as the Spanish Government encouraged settlers to come in and develop the land and to help control the Indians. Just off the coast of St. Augustine, they encountered a tropical storm and the ship was washed up on the bar and wrecked. Some of the passengers were lost. Among the lost was Rebecca, wife of John Seymour. He did manage to save his small daughter, Mary Rebecca. As Captain Murray's ship was wrecked in service to the Spanish government, he and his colonists were granted land in 1803 in what is now New Smyrna. Sampson LEE  ca.   1812 North Carolina, died unknown. Father of Joseph T. LEE, Robert A. LEE, William Levi (Levy) LEE. Married Susan (Susie) UNKNOWN. Sampson LEE, Susan Unknown and three sons can be found on the 1860 Gadsden, County, Florida census. Although, little is known about Sampson LEE's life, there is a long standing bit of family lore that states Sampson LEE died, along with his oldest son Joseph T. (Tommie?), during the Civil War. William Levi (Levy) LEE, age 11, and youngest son, Robert A. LEE, age 8, were too young to enlist. Also included in the family history, but not shown in 1860 census, is a sister, Susie. (See attached census record.) Susan UNKNOWN ca. 1813, North Carolina. Some indication she was buried in or around Bainbridge, Georgia. Susan was the wife of Sampson LEE and the mother of Joseph T. Lee, Robert A. LEE, and William Levi (Levy) LEE. Family history states Susan's father was a white man but  reportedly, her mother was of Choctaw or Seminole Indian bloodline. There is a long standing bit of family lore that states Sampson LEE died during the Civil War, along with their oldest son Joseph T. (Tommie?). Susie was overcome with widow's disappear and died shortly afterwards. William Levi (Levy) LEE, age 11, and youngest son, Robert A. LEE, age 8, were too young to enlist. Also included in the family history, but not shown in 1860 census, is a sister, Susie. It is thought Susan moved into Bainbridge, Decatur County, Georgia with William Levi and Robert A. sometime in the late 1800s. Genealogical notes taken from Lela Belle Hutchinson Barnes.   Asa Pickett born bet. 1800-1810 North Carolina, died UNKNOWN.   Asa was the husband of Martha Ann (Carter ?)   and the father of Josephine PICKETT and Asa Crow PICKETT. Other children included Cely Ann PICKETT, Mitty Mosella PICKETT, Cynthia PICKETT, Peney Ann PICKETT, and Frances L. PICKETT. Asa and his family are found in the 1850. 1860, and 1870 Gadsden County, Florida census (see attached census). It is thought that prior to moving to Gadsden County, Florida, Asa PICKETT lived in Pulaski County, Georgia. (See attached related census, land records, and early marriage records for Pulaski County, Georgia.) On the census for 1850 Gadsden County, Florida. Asa PICKETT and family are listed on line 120. Here Asa is shown as a 48 year old man with 6 young children under the age of 11. This would indicate that Asa was 37 before he started having children. This is highly unlikely since the average age of marriage during this time period was between 16 and 20 for males -- earlier for females. Likewise Martha is 40, showing, she too, would be at a much older age (29) than the norm for starting a family. My gut feeling is that this is a second marriage for Asa and Martha and both may have other children already grown and out on their on. Note a Martha Lambert, 16 at the bottom of 1850 Gadsden County, Florida census list. This may very well be the daughter of Martha from a previous marriage (hence the name Martha). The first two girls Celia (Cely) and Mitty Mosella are born in Georgia, as is the Martha Lambert. The first child born in Florida to Asa Pickett and Martha Ann is Cynthia age 7 which indicates that the family was in Georgia prior to moving to Florida around 1843. Our Josephine is listed as 3 years old indicating her birth date to be 1847 which may prove closer to the true date given the chronographic order of the other children ages. Asa Pickett found in: Land Records: AL, AR, FL, LA, MI, MN, OH, WI, 1790-1907 Document number:  5467     Description number:  1      Number of acres:  39.7800     Accession number:  FL0120__.338      Patentee Surname:  Pickett     Patentee given name:  Asa      State name:  Florida      Volume:  120     Page number:  338      Land office:  Tallahassee     Aliquot part reference:  NESE      Section number:  34      Township:  2 North     Range:  5 West      Meridian or special survey area:  Tallahassee Meridian      Title transfer authority:  Sale-Cash Entries      Combined signature date:  Apr. 20, 1837      Multiple patentees:  N     Multiple warrantees:  N      Signature:  Y     Canceled document:  N     Subsurface rights reserved:  N      Metes and bounds:  N     Fractional section:  N      Data Introduction     Martha Ann (Carter?) born  South Carolina. Died UNKNOWN. Martha Ann was the wife of Asa PICKETT. Born in South Carolina died UNKNOWN.   Martha was the mother of Josephine Pickett and Asa Crow Pickett. Little is known about Martha Ann and the two references pertaining to her are include here. The may be a clue to Martha's identify on the 1850 Gadsden County, Florida census. At the end of the list is a Martha Lambert, age 16.  This may well be Martha's daughter from a first marriage. Asa Crow PICKETT born March 1850. Son of Asa (Acie) PICKETT and Martha Ann Carter? Married Zelpha UNKNOWN. Father of Ferdinand PICKETT, born June 1885,  Asa S. PICKETT, born August 1889, Carl A., born 1891, Walter PICKETT born September 1898, Delia (Celia?) born March 1878, and Mattie PICKETT Rogers born February 1882. This information was found on the 1900 Decatur County, Georgia census. The older children listed here may have been born in another marriage, considering the ages of Asa and Zelpha at the time of this census. Asa Crow PICKETT is the only known brother of Josephine PICKETT. Ida Mae Tillery LEE born April 16, 1892 in Midway, Dale County, Alabama, 1892. She died November, 30, 1943 in Hilton, Alabama and is buried in a family cemetery in Old Columbia, near Dothan. Ida Mae Tillery LEE was the daughter of William Levi (Levy) LEE and Josephine PICKETT. At 15 she married Lewis Hutchinson a marriage from which a daughter Lela Belle Hutchinson was born in 1907. Lewis Hutchinson died soon after and she remarried George E. Rolison in 1910. It is not certain how George Rolison and Ida Mae met but the story goes that George Rolison had a cousin who work for a local telegraph and cable company and it is he who introduced the two. George reportedly sent for Ida Mae LEE and they were married in Clark County, Mississippi. It is true the young couple spent the early years of their marriage near the ancestral home of George's father Benjamin Franklin Rolison in Pierce Springs, Mississippi. Both George and Ida Mae were widower's with young children. George had 3 children from his first marriage to Georgia Kemp: Annabel, Ollie, and Calvin Berry Rolison. Ida Mae had a daughter, Lela Belle Hutchinson. Together they had 5 children: Wilbur, George Emmett, Joseph IM, Billy Glen, Pearl, and Myrtle Jewel.  Ida Mae was a strikingly beautiful women with delicate features and Indian physical characteristics. She was a small woman of statue, dark skinned with high cheek bones and piercing brown eyes. She was lovingly remember by my father as a women who knew much of the Indian lore and medicine. Ida Mae was often called upon when neighbors and kin were ill and helped birth many children in her community. She had a natural aptitude for music and played the piano for the Methodist church of which she was a member until her death. George E. ROLISON born  January, 1882, Pierce Springs, Clarke County, Mississippi; died. George E. Rolison was the only son of Benjamin Franklin Rolison and Elizabeth Jane Fleming. He married Georgia Kemp in Mississippi, date unknown. They had 3 children; Annabelle, Ollie, and Calvin Berry Rolison before her death, date UNKNOWN. George married Ida Mae Tillery Lee in 1918. Their children were Wilbur Rolison, Joseph IM Rolison, Billy Glen Rolison, Pearl Rolison, Myrtle Jewel Rolison, and my father George Emmett Rolison. After Ida Mae's death in 1943, George continued to live near his son George Emmett, in Eufaula, Barbour County, Alabama. During the early years of their marriage Ida and George lived in Crandall, Clarke, County, Mississippi, near the ancestral home of George's father, Benjamin Franklin Rolison. Acie (ASA) Greenberry LEE   was born August 9, 1881, Pike County, Alabama; dead Phenix City, Alabama, March 11, 1965. He is buried in Lakeview Memory Gardens, Phenix City, Alabama. Acie Greenberry Lee is the oldest documented son of William Levy Lee and Josephine Pickett. He married Vassie Ordella Meredith. Their children are Albert Carlton Lee (twin), Calvin Cason Lee (twin, died at age 2 or 3), Claudia Mae Lee, Willie Matilda Lee, Augusta Jane Lee, and James William Lee, Patricia Lee. Vassie Ordella Meredith born  July 13, 1888, Geneva County, Alabama; died April 9, 1965, Columbus, Georgia. Buried Lakeview Memory Gardens, Phenix City, Alabama. She married Acie Greenberry LEE December 10, 1905 in Dale County Alabama.  Their children are Albert Carlton Lee (twin), Calvin Cason Lee (twin, died at age 2 or 3) Claudia Mae Lee, Willie Matilda Lee, Augusta Jane Lee, Patricia Lee, William James Lee. Vassie was the daughter of Jim Meredith and Henri Alice Conner of Pike County, Alabama. Robert LEE  born between 1893-1900. Died Phenix City, Alabama. youngest son of Josephine Pickett and William Levy LEE. Robert Lee never married and had no known offspring. He lived at home with his parents and was beloved by his nieces and nephews. He was a teacher all of his adult life. Died at home from heart failure. Buried Lakeview Memory Gardens, Phenix City, Alabama. James Meredith   born March 4, 1860. He married Henri Alice Conner. Children of James Meredith and Henri Alice Conner are: William Meredith, Georgia Milton Meredith, Vassie Ordella Meredith, Alice Francis Meredith, Mary Meredith, Margie Elizabeth Meredith, Claudia Lee Meredith, Rosa Meredith. Henri Alice Conner born November 28, 1863. She married James Meredith. Children of Henri Alice Conner and James Meredith are: William Meredith, Georgia Milton Meredith, Vassie Ordella Meredith, Alice Francis Meredith, Mary Meredith, Margie Elizabeth Meredith, Claudia Lee Meredith, Rosa Meredith. Benjamin Franklin Rolison born 1858 in Dallas County, Alabama, died 1940 Pierce Springs, Dallas County, Mississippi. He married Elizabeth Jane Fleming, November 16, 1880 in Clarke County, Mississippi. Their children are: George E. Rolison, Alice Virginia Rolison, Leody Bidlay Rolison, Sallie Dallas Rolison, Effie Cora Rolison, Maggie Ann Rolison. Benjamin Franklin Rolison was a prominent citizen of Clarke County, Mississippi. He owned much land. He, and brother William Francis Rolison, were responsible for the development of many businesses in that county including a mercantile and grist mill. A nonconformist by nature Benjamin Franklin loved the outdoors, and raised eyebrows in the community by spending a great deal of time among the local Native people, cultivating an intense interest in Indian religion and customs. After Elizabeth Jane Fleming's death he never remarried and lived an isolated existence on the old homestead, which was still standing a few years back. Oral history states benjamin Franklin took an Indian woman as a partner in his later years but this has not be confirmed. Benjamin was also known for fiery red hair and a quick temper. It is reported that he had great love of music and was known to play the piano until the wee hours of the morning. Another humorous, albeit dubious, tale about Benjamin relates to his horse carriage. He was particularly proud of his horse carriage, the largest and grandest carriage in the area. Every now and then Benjamin Franklin, being a widower, developed a hanking for socializing. He would have his stable boy bring his carriage around and take off for the Alabama line in search of music, drink, and camaraderie. Early the next day the horse would find his way home devoid of any help from Benjamin Franklin who was fast asleep in the carriage. He and his brother William Francis were said to be polar opposites; William, tall and dark, Benjamin, shorter and light. Benjamin Franklin Rolison and William Francis Rolison married Fleming sisters. Several of the Rolison sisters also married into the Fleming line. Today Clarke County, Mississippi is still a county here many Fleming and Rolison descendants live. Both Benjamin Franklin and William Francis are buried in Stroud Cemetery, Pierce Springs, Clarke County, Mississippi.

I am looking for information on the parents of Andrew L Miller b 3-9-1809 Va or Tn, who died in August 1865 in Screven Co Ga. He and his brother William (b 1811 Tn) are buried in the Cornelius Burke Cemetery in Screven Co near Rocky Ford. There seem to be ties to the Burke, Parker, and Daughtry families. They also had a brother Drury b 1822 Tn who lived in Pickens Co Al. They are said to be from Sweetwater, Monroe Co Tn. Andrew married Priscilla Harris b 1816 Monroe Co Tn. They lived there in 1840, then were in Wilkinson Co Ga in 1850 where he was listed as a railroad manager. The family settled in Screven County Ga where I suspect they had family ties. My husband's great-grandfather was their son William Thomas Miller b 1852, d 1883, buried Paynes Chapel UMC in Jenkins Co Ga. He married Sarah Vidella Dutton. His siblings were John L, a female possibly Magdalena, Eliza J who married a Howell, Drury, Martha Ann (Mollie), Eglentine, George Washington, Andrew Jackson, David S, and James P Miller. One sister married a William Cory. This family may have been related to the Jacob Miller family from Germany who settled New Bern NC in 1810, or to the Nathaniel Miller from Ireland b 1738 who settled in Screven Co Ga. Any help with this family would be greatly appreciated.

I am researching the maternal side of my family. My mothers maiden name is JONES. Her father was Willie Jones born in Jesup,GA in October of 1914. He had 4 brothers Van,Elsa,Buck,Shorty. His fathers name was James Leonard Jones and his mother was Fannie Ogborn Jones. They moved to North Florida in the Jasper,FL area sometime before 1933. I would appreciate it if anyone who know anything of this family would contact me. The other information that I have is that James Leonard Jones's father was John Jones who married Mary Bullard. I do not have a date or place. John Jones's father was Elsie (or somthing close to that). Looking for James Cicero Licurgus Bennett born in Georgia about 1832. Shows up in Florida earliest time known1864 when he married Elizabeth Cone in St. Johns County. They lived in Volusia County and produced four children, James William Bennett, Thomas Cephas Bennett, Mary Americus Bennett and Virginia Bennett. James committed suicide before 1890, supposedly because of pain suffered from wounds in the Civil War. He is NOT the JCL Bennett who married intio the Beverly family, nor is he their son, but he must be related in some way as his two middle names are not very common. Any info at all would be greatly appreciated. He was my great grandfather. Doris V. Smith

Hello, looking for any information on William Thornton b. 1841 m. 1865. He had numerous children but only have records for Silas Lenard (leonard) Thornton (my grandfather), Robert Albert Thornton, and David (Dave) Ennis Thornton. His wife is either Mary Thompson or Sallie Long. Records from the family Bible and Federal Census conflict with each other. Robert Albert Thornton's SSN application has WIlliam Thornton's middle Iniaital R. but the family Bible has it as M. My Father, Earl Henry William Thornton Sr. Said there were children that I can find no record of at all, such as Mose and Issum Thornton who were twins. I have a picture of them but it does have the relationships on the back, only their names. Any information would be deeply appreciated.

Mr Greg I came across your page and found it very interesting. My grandfather was Sam Wainwright of Prattville, Alabama. His father was Daniel Wainwright whose father was John Wainwright. I have an Uncle Tom and my mom has a cousin named James. Is there any way we could be kin? I know you said you were busy but thought it'd be neat to see. (I have also heard that my family could have been from N.C. and that they were caught stealing horses and fled to Ga.) Thanks Gennie Cartee

I am doing some Rhoden genealogy for a friend. She states that her line comes from the sister or niece of Osceola. The ancestor's name is Sanee Rhoden. Reportly there is a State Memeorial Gravemarker on her grave which is located in Charlton County....she lived to be over 100 years old. I can't find anything in the census. My friend's great grandmother was Racheal Rhoden. The only one I find in the census, was a daughter of a Rhoden man who came from South Carolina. Does anyone have a clue about this family's genealogy? Sanee's sister was Missouri Canaday and her genealogy is well documented.

Does anyone out there know the meaning of Satilla. I am 40 years old and have been questioned from the time I was a little girl to what the name means. I was born in Jacksonville, Florida. I know my great grandmother was full Cherokee. I know there is a Satilla River on the Georgia/Florida border and there are several other places I've seen the name while on trips "back South." However, I've resided in Washington State most of my life (since 1970). Nobody here has ever heard the name and curiosity is getting the best of me. Please let me know if you find anything out. Thank you, Satilla

Hi Greg, have enjoyed your website and all the queries posted. All these years I knew nothing about my family history and in the last three months I have learned more than I ever could imagine. I am the great great granddaughter of Annie Lloyd, daug of Mariam Hatcher and Henry Lloyd. (Mariam was also married to Archibald Smith -whose line also crosses my family past as my grandmother married his g,g,great grandson. I was born a Smith, who is married to a Morris, whose background, his grandmother was a Holland.) Annie was married to George Strickland and then Archie Wainwright. I am trying to tie in George Strickland's background and all of his daughters. My great grandmother was Maggie Strickland who married James Morgan. I am also trying to understand who Archie Wainwright's family was during and before he was married to my great grandmother. Any and all help is greatly appreciated. Thank you

It is true that it has been said that James A. Rowell was a Native American. Being a Native American is true, he was born here in this country. Being Indian, well it needs to be proven before it gets printed! I too, grew up hearing this, but proving it is a different story! Maybe as a family, we first need to make up our minds whether we are Lumbee or Cherokee without the true Native American laughing at us! Sincrely, Carolyn Haigler
