Hi Greg Found your great page I thought I had found the "roots". You have all the right names - Griffin, Gunter, Wheeler but sadly none of the first names match. My grandfather was Dallas Caswell Griffin b. 1872 in Savannah, GA. My daddy does not remember what Dallas' daddy's name was; he does remember that Dallas' mother was Joanna Wheeler. She eventually married a Freeman. ? Griffin (Dallas'father) probably died in 1886 because there were two girls, Ola and Nollie, who went to the Catholic orphanage in Savannah at that time. Dallas also had two brothers, Richard Franklin Taylor Griffin and Gazzie Lamar Griffin. Gazzie ended up in Jacksonville, FL and died sometime during WWII. Dallas married a Eugenia Gunter from SC. Daughter of Virgil Alexander Gunter and Mary Taylor. Would appreciate it if anyone has any info on what Dallas' father's name was. My dad remembers a lot of Gunter info and I have that line pretty far back but am not having much luck on the Griffin side. Thanks for your help. You can e-mail me @ anlastumpe@aol.com

Hi: I too am trying to find the enroads to the S. Ga. Lott families. My Gr-Grandfather was Joel Lott. My Grandfather was Wiley Lott. My father was Hugh Lott. There are lots of lotts around that area. However, there seems to be such a big ole family mystery. When Wiley was a young man he and his then wife (Mary Ann Newbern) left the vicinity of Quitman GA. (This is where my father was born in 1904) and they then traveled around S. Ga, N. Fl and the family finally setteled in or around Columbus, GA. In that treck Mary Ann died. Wiley met and married at least 2 other wives. I have no records of any names for the 2nd & 3rd wives. I grew up around the Columbus area and thought we were the only Lott family around. All my aunts and uncles were older when I was born. They are now all deseased. Any information would be helpful and greatly appreciated. Thanks gloria

Amanda, This is in response to your recent posting concerning James Cox. Is this James Cox that you are referring to the one that married Frances Wilkinson? This James and his sister (Jerushua Cox b. 1831 - my ancestor) were the illegitimate children of James Fullwood and Mary Beverly (per Folks Huxford's notes). Mary was married to a James Cox and was Mrs. Mary Cox when the illegitimate children were born. Interestingly, she gave them the Cox name. You can see Jerushua's tombstone in Pilgrim's Rest cemetery near Waynesville Georgia. Someone in the family seems to have attempted to scratch the Cox name from it. Interesting. Greg Wainright

Dear Greg: I am trying to locate any information on an ALEXANDER or FREDERICK DOUGLAS, living in Montgomery Co., Ga @1790 - 1810. His son was also ALEXANDER who was married to DICY WATSON. They had several children, one which was named ALEXANDER B. (or A.B.) DOUGLAS who was married to MISSOURI MORRISON. I cannot make the certain distinction as to direct line of parents of my Alexander who was born @1797. It seems as if each generation named sons either Frederick or Alexander - and the brothers named their sons Frederick or Alexander. If anyone has ANY informatin on this line, please let me know. Thanks for the opportunity to present this information. I would also be interested in any information regarding ELIAS HARDY McCLELLAND or BENJAMIN T. BAGLEY; both of which would have lived in or near the Douglas, Alma, Nicholls or Telmore communities.

Have been running into brick walls looking for James Cicero Licurgus Bennett. There are a couple of James C.L. Bennetts out there but none of the data fits. My James C.L. Bennett married Elizabeth Cone or Coan in St. Johns County, Florida in 1864. They settled later in Volusia County, Florida where at least one of the four know children was born. From there I don't know. But in the 1900 census of DeSoto County, Elizabeth was a widow and living with her daughter Mary Bennett Whidden and Eli Whidden and children. I assume that James and Elizabeth both migrated from Georgia, but don't know when. I have no date of birth for James, but Elizabeth was born in 1840. These are my ggrandparents and I certainly would like to clear up this mystery. Is there anyone out there who might have the info I need?? I hope so. Searching for wife of James W. Rowland (Charlton Co 1850--Clinch County 1860) Mary Ann, believed to be Strickland or Allbritton. James' orphans received support from the 1864 Pierce County, Ga. Salt Issue. Some of James' and Mary Ann's children were living with Strickland's and Allbritton's in 1870 Pierce Co. Censeus. Son Robert married Amey Howard D/O James in Ware County and after Amey died, married Minnie Whitehead in Berrian County. My grandfather, C. W. Rowland, use to say he had an Uncle Henry Strickland. (b Jan 1888), Joseph (b abt 1890); however, it was stated that they had had 10 children and that 9 of them were still living. Nancy and John Green were not listed in the 1870 or 1880 Charlton Co Censuses. Am wondering if they may have been in Brantley Co, since Nancy's obituary stated she was living with one of her sons in Atkinson, GA at the time of her death. Mr McClelland kindly checked the Brantley Co Cemetery book for me, but found only Nancy and her son John Matthew Green buried at High Bluff.
