FROM THE UNDERSHEPHERD'S HEART:

"MY CONVICTION ON HOMOSEXUALITY"

BY: REV JERRY D. ESPAÑOLA, M. Div

There has been a lot of controversy over the sin of homosexuality. There are those who maintain that homosexuality is not a sin but can be accepted and interpreted as a "valid alternative lifestyle". And there are those who might exhibit an over-reaction as to the hostile denunciation of homosexuality by some Christian believers. I strongly believe that homosexuality is committed by a homosexual sinner in need of God's loving mercy and deliverance.

What does the Scripture says about homosexual lusts and acts?
1. For this reason God gave them up to vile passions. For even their women exchanged the natural use for what is against nature. Likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust for one another, men with men committing what is shameful, and receiving in themselves the penalty of their error which was due. And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a debased mind, to do those things which are not fitting” (Romans 1:26-28).
2. You shall not lie with a male as with a woman. It is an abomination (Leviticus 18:22, NKJV). If a man lies with a male as he lies with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination. They shall surely be put to death. Their blood shall be upon them (Leviticus 20:13, NKJV).

The Scriptures gives us an unmistakable perception as to how one should understand homosexuality. Biblically speaking, the ONLY concept of homosexuality (and lesbianism) as a sin is focused primarily on genital intercourse. The book of Leviticus defines this as "you shall not lie with a male as with a woman" (and vice-versa), which describes the act as an abomination and deserves the penalty of death. This has to be clearly emphasized for reasons that there are those who over-react that homosexuality is a sin because God have only created man and woman; or it is a sin because of the very feminine intimation they put on display; or much worst, is the suggestive notion that these people are demonized!

In the New Testament, it was pointed out that homosexual acts is a desecration of the Law of God articulating why those who practice such cannot inherit the kingdom of God: “Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived. Neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor homosexuals, nor sodomites, nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortionists will inherit the kingdom of God. And such were some of you. But you were washed, but you were sanctified, but you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus and by the Spirit of our God” (I Corinthians 6:9-11).

However, just like any repentant adulterer or fornicator, the HOPE of change is not an impossibility for those involved in homosexuality, for they can be redeemed, washed, sanctified and justified like everyone else upon repentance from such sin and belief in the saving and transforming power of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Just like any ordinary sinner, they need the understanding and acceptance of the community around them. How can we help them embrace the truth and power of the Word when we frequently drive them away? We should not play God in trying to change them the way we wanted them to be but instead, let us provide them with both logical and biblical reasons as to why they need the saving power of our Lord Jesus Christ in their lives. I therefore find no problem with homosexuals, but of course, minus the lusts and the acts.
