Savannah Friends of Greyhounds As Pets

Savannah Friends of Greyhounds As Pets is primarily interested in educating the public about greys and adoption of retired racing greyhounds. The group was founded in February 1999 by Lorna Cross and Dave Doubek and is run by a group of dedicated volunteers. For any information about the local group, please e-mail us.

We are affiliated with Jacksonville, FL Greyhounds As Pets. Call Shirley Kane at (904) 389-2934 for more information. The Jacksonville Greyhounds As Pets kennel has a comprehensive website that gives you the chance to look at potential pets, and what the adoption process entails.

Most greyhounds are retired between the ages of 2-5 years old. Racing is an industry, and when the grey does not produce financial results for the kennel, they are adopted out (other kennels are not so kind to even offer retirement). Jacksonville is a no kill facility with the Greyhounds As Pets adoption offices located right by the track.

Be sure to read Cynthia A. Branigan's "Adopting the Racing Greyhound" (ISBN: 087605193X). It is one of the most helpful grey guides around. Another valuable text is "Retired Racing Greyhounds for Dummies" by Lee Livingood (ISBN: 0764552767).

Come see us at many local events and Meet & Greets to familiarize yourself with the gentle nature of greyhounds. You will come to realize why they call the retired racing greyhounds "45 mph couch potatoes".
