Crawford Building Sold
Monday, December 8, 2003, the Vigo County School Corporation
voted to sell the Crawford Elementary School building to Head Start. Head
Start will relocate there from its current location at the former Greenwood
School. Most children living in both the former Greenwood and former Crawford
attendance districts currently attend Farrington Grove Elementary on South
6th Street. See
News
for more details.
What was all the fuss about?
So why did so many Crawford parents and other community members
object so loudly to the proposed closing of Crawford Elementary School?
Why did some continue to fight the closing for months after the school
board vote on January 14, 2002?
Why do people who have moved out of state still write letters to the Terre
Haute Tribune Star about Crawford, over a year after the children walked
out of their neighborhood school for the last time on May 31, 2002?
The following links are the some of the statements made by Crawford parents
and local community members as well as some of the research data taken from
sources like the Department of Education and Census records.

Crawford kids need your support
After the filing of the Crawford lawsuit on behalf of three
2nd grade children and their mothers, the Crawford Children's Legal Defense
Fund raised about 60 percent of its goal of $10,000. Terre Haute attorney
Bob Hellmann generously provided legal services to the Crawford families
far in excess of the funds raised.
If you are interested in contributing to the
Crawford Children's Legal Defense Fund, make your check payable
to Bob Hellmann, be sure to write in the memo area that it is for the Crawford
Children's Legal Defense Fund and mail it to:
Bob Hellmann
30 N. 7th St. #101
Terre Haute, IN. 47802
We thank you for your emotional and financial support. Please
note that attorney Hellmann is not connected to this website in any way.
The authors of the website are grateful for the support he has provided
the children of the former Crawford School neighborhood and of Terre Haute.
