Thank you for showing interest in my 2002 journey up the Appalachian Trail. This site contains nothing spectacular, state-of-the-art, or anything like that... just a bit of information about my trip for those who are curious. There are also plenty of trail photos to see!!
The Appalachian Trail is a 2,168 mile footpath that stretches from Springer Mtn. Georgia to Mt. Katahdin, Maine. Originally conceived by Benton MacKaye in the 1920s, the "AT" oficially became a National Scenic Trail in 1968. This meant it was to be preserved from anyone or anything that might spoil the experience and scenery of the undisturbed landscape. To this day, much of what was proposed then is still the same; however some sections have had to be relocated to escape the encroaching development of us humans. All said, the footpath is there for you and I to wander, relax our minds, and enjoy the natual scenery that many never realize existed.
Some may wonder about the name of the site. Upon moving back to Raleigh (thinking a job would be easy to find in comparison to Wilmington) it took nearly a month and a half to find a decent job that could fund the AT. The name comes from the place of employment where a majority of the funding originated. Just off of I-40 is place called Goodmark Foods, Inc. They are the world's only producer/packager of Slim Jim brand products. Once hired, I began working up to 70 hours a week to save what was necessary for the trip. It worked out perfectly, both punctually and financially- thus, I was "saved by Slim Jims!" |
