Donate to the Red Cross in Memory of Ted Kord

On August 29th this year, at least 1,300 people were killed and hundreds of thousands were displaced when Hurricane Katrina struck the Gulf States. On October 8th, an earthquake hit Northern Pakistan, killing about 80,000 people. On December 26, 2004, almost 300,000 people died due to tsunamis triggered by a massive earthquake in the Indian Ocean. For each catastrophe, some of the first heroes on the scene were from the Red Cross.

Superman ain't ever going to fly in to save the day in this world, and there won't ever be a real Justice League, but there is the Red Cross. And for me, the JLI was kind of the comic book equivalent of the Red Cross: a humanitarian task force that helped save lives regardless of national boundaries or ideologies or ways of life. It didn't matter who you were, they were there to help. And in the kind of world we live in, we all need as much help as we can get. And, if you can, why not give as much help as you can?

So what does the above statement mean? Well, while you're helping save the world by donating to the Red Cross, you can also help save Ted. When you make an online donation to the Red Cross, you're given the option of making the donation a tribute or memorial. My thought?

Ted's death in the DCU was stupid and pointless. He was a great character and a good guy and he deserves to be remembered. I know that this is a loony idea and I honestly don't know if anyone will think its anything but a joke. I do mean what I write here, though. I'm just one silly person who thinks that maybe its worth giving to a world-rescuing task force. I'm an even sillier person for wanting to do whatever I can to keep part of my childhood alive. But I also think that somehow this is right, and for this holiday season, this is how I'll remember Ted and make sure he's remembered, even a little.

When you make your online donation as a tribute or memorial, the Red Cross will send a card to a recipient you designate, to let him know of your gift. I strongly urge anyone who does this to send that card to Dan Didio, Vice President - Executive Editor of DC Comics. He literally has Ted's life in his hands, and if anyone should know what Ted Kord means to the fans, its Mr. Didio. Here's the information to enter on the Red Cross form:

Help show DC what Ted meant to us. Help save the world. Help save Ted.
