Upon completion of the CELTA course from Cambridge RSA at the British Council Hong Kong, Trisna Marhalim started tutoring students at various tutorial centres. The reputation of being an excellent teacher grew from strength to strength esulted in offers to teach summer and extra curricular programmes in schools ranging from kindergartens to secondary schools.
Moving on in her teaching career, she shifted her focus on to adult learners for business and workplace English teaching. Afterwards, an opportunity to be trained and certified as an examiner for the BULATS speaking and writing tests was presented itself and Trisna was able to meet the challenge and became one of the examiners approved by Cambridge ESOL.
Being full aware of the continuous changes and development in English language teaching, she enrolled at the University of Hong Kong to undertake the Postgraduate Diploma in Education majoring in English.
As part of the training she chose to go to Melbourne, Australia for a two-month immersion programme. Under the guidance of highly proficient tutors at La Trobe university language centre, she gained further enrichment in both language and professional developments.
The above modules combined with visits to the private and government schools to observe and occasionally assist mainstream and ESL classes enhanced the experience further. Most importantly, noticing the positive classroom atmosphere built upon good relationship between students and their teachers has struck her the importance of fulfilling the social and psychological needs of learners which is sometimes neglected.
Having lived in a few places with different cultures and languages such as Indonesia, Australia, Sweden and Hong Kong, Trisna has become multi-culturally savvy and sensitive.
Another contribution that shaped Trisna into a well-rounded person came from the business world where she worked for a few years in some multinational corporations such as Xerox, CSFB, MCI and Morgan Stanley.
