Sayreville HS, Sayreville, NJ - 2/2/02

The 2002 Variety Show was a showcase of Sayreville War Memorial High School’s most talented acts, two of whom a few months later would have record deals with Columbia Records. Another Sayreville based band The Venice opened the show, as well as various combinations from other bands performing various cover songs. Pauly Montigay performed an acoustic original, then there was the usual array of dancing, including an extremely good Michael Jackson dance by Kris Brus and Dee Vargas, and of course the step squad putting on an act. But the act that stole the show was very early on in the night. MC Will Griffiths came on stage dressed like a thug to introduce ICE as the next act, performing Vanilla Ice’s Ice Ice Baby, and dedicating the performance to “your mother.” ICE hit the stage, in what the audience started out believing was a joke, but soon found out that ICE was as serious as an intensive care unit. Along with the words, “Turn off the lights and I’ll glow,” with the help of a pair of black lights, and the light crew, ICE did just that, sending the crowd into a roaring frenzy. From that point on, the crowd knew that ICE was serious and ICE easily stole the show with his impressive ability to spit rhymes faster than Jeff Gordon drives, despite being white.
