            Sarawak, covering 124,946sq. km is the largest of the 13 states of Malaysia. It occupies the northwest coastal strip of the Island of Borneo. It is also a tropical country which enjoys a warm and equable climate. Its 2 million population consists of more than 26 different races. Many of the tribes groups such as the Iban, Kayans and Kenyahs live in longhouses in the interior. Most of the Malays and Chinese live in the coastal areas and urban centers.

                                                                              

Sibu Waterfront

            SIBU, the main gateway to the numerous riverine towns and villages along the Rejang/ Igan River and adventure travel in the 2nd largest town in Sarawak. With a population of 200,000, Sibu is a thriving and modern town dominated by its busy and colorful waterfront. The majority Foochow community whose forefathers migrated from Southern China in the 18th century to escape poverty has made Sibu what it is today, a vibrant and bustling town whose contribution to the state’s economy is evident. Besides timber and its related downstream activities, Sibu is also well-known for its shipbuilding industry. Some of the best quality potteries are also produced here. The Iban and Malays form the other main racial groups.

           It is generally accepted that eating out in Sibu is one of the cheapest in the state. Local Foochow ‘Kong Bian’, a type of bagel baked in tandoori type oven is a must. And so are ‘Kang Muan’ noodle and Foochow vermicelli served in clear chicken broth or in ‘Pa Tin’ herbal broth. Fresh seafood and game meat are widely available in restaurants and coffee shop restaurants which numbers 152 in a 3km radius. Local fruits such as durians, Borneo Longans and Olives are seasonal product.
