Notes for JOHAN PETER SALEN, SR.:  He taught school in Germany for 25 years, and played the organ in church.  He went from Germany to Ohio to visit his son.  This was the first time he had seen his son since his son ran away from home when he was 15 yrs old.

Notes for CATHERINE FISHER (FISCHER):  Her family originated in the US but moved to canada after the American Revolution.  Her family maybe listed in the group of loyalists that were given land and money by England after the revolution to resettle in Canada.

**He was a gifted musician who played the violin at age 8

**He served in the civil war from 9/18/1861 to 6/13/1865 in the11th Battery  New York Light Artillery. On loan to Rhode Island with Commodore Joel Abbot, Camp No. 21

**Lewis Salen was at one time working with a logging crew.

**She moved away from Philips, ME with her family when she was 9 years old and went to Rockford, IL where she lived when she met and married Lewis Salen.

**She was a school teacher in IL

**She told her grandchildren about when she and a friend put on their ice skates and skated in to town on the river.  When they got there, they heard the news that President Lincoln had been shot and killed.
