Water is very important in keeping us healthy and helping our bodies to perform properly. Water makes up 70 to 75% of our total body weight. Every cell in our body needs water to function - cells that make our brain, heart, lungs and muscles work. Water consumption is realted to the health of our bodies in many ways: Ever feel tired in the middle of the day? Mild dehydration is one of the most common causes of daytime fatigue. Need a boost? Drinking plenty of water increases metabolism and boosts energy levels. Feeling stressed out? Consumption of water helps to alleviate some headaches and helps reduce blood pressure. Feeling stiff after sitting and crocheting? Drinking daily water requirements can help ease joint pain. Feeling bloated? Water helps the body to eliminate toxic waste products and decreases the chance of developing kidney stones. Is your skin dry? A hydrated body also has hydrated skin. Got a sweet tooth? Water can be a natural appetite suppressant. An average person needs to drink six to eight glasses of water per day. Some may even need more. Always have water on hand to sip on through the day. By the time you feel thirsty, you're already starting to be dehydrated. Caffeinated drinks such as coffee, tea or soda, act as diuretics and increase the loss of body fluids. Try substituting water for your second cup of coffee or that mid-afternoon soda. Here are some more ideas to increase your water consumption and make your body happy: Add a splash of fruit juice for flavor. Add a slice of lemon, lime or orange. Keep containers of cold water in the fridge for convenience. Fill up a big jug of water to place beside you while you crochet. I am not a health professional. These are suggestions for better health. If you have any concerns about your water consumption or wish to know more, please consult your family doctor. |
